A few projects I have done recently

8' of fill sounds like fun. How are the adjustable forks working out and do the tines pivot?

It's been a fight with the rain but my guys battled it out. We should've been running storm by now and the concrete guys pouring the slab but we've had several inches of rain since this project started.

Love the hydraulic forks, the tines are fixed to the frame. We'll start storm piping next week that includes a 36" CMP triple barrel detention system, the hyd. forks should come in handy. Most of the time we use a CTL as a support machine for pipe laying - bringing pipe and keeping the rock box loaded. It's much easier to hook and un-hook the hydraulic lines than it is to move the forks on a standard skid steer fork attachment, as we all know those can be a PIA to slide.

On these small sites a CTL more maneuverable than our 420DIT. On larger sites we bring in the 420 as it just speeds the process up and it can move pre-cast inlets and manholes.

The storm on this site is only 4 structures/inlets, 1 headwall and some ADS and RCP. We'll use the 321 to move the pre-cast structures and the 279 to move the pipe. Haven't seen the 36" CMP det. system yet, will probably use slings and the 321 to move it's components.

When I bid the job I priced trucking the fill in with the possibility of making a deal with the adjacent land owner. So there we were installing silt fence and a nice F350 pulled up towing a trailer with a generator on it. The lady driving the truck pulled into the parts store next door and walked up. She proceeded to ask me if we could clear some brush on the front of the next two lots so they could get real estate signs put up. The generator on the trailer was to run her sawzall and she was prepared to cut the brush herself, she's a spunky older lady I quickly became friends with - gotta respect that kind of "getter done" attitude.

It didn't take long to work a deal as the next two lots needed to be cut down to be more marketable. Long story short we cut the brush with the brushcat on the T250 and in return got free fill. I love horse trading.

I wish you would send us some rain, we are some kinda dry! Hard getting rid of wood, we need some heavy rain to slow the loggers down and stop flooding the mills with wood.

Worked out good on the fill. Sometimes you come across a deal like that and everyone is happy. You never know you might wind up with getting more work from the woman that owned the land next door.

Very true. We've graded their two lots back out and cleaned up the brush. I want to leave them a nice site.

36" CMP detention system pipe came in one bundle with the 8", 18" and 24" HDPE inside the CMP - all strapped together..

At least it wasn't heavy just awkward. Moving the bundle to the lot next door, we'll pull it as we need it. Picked it with 2 - 20' straps and 2 - 20' chains.

Put two small piles of dirt on either side of the bundle so when we cut the bands it didn't go everywhere like spaghetti.



4x4 knockout box for a yard inlet and 18" HDPE. This line runs behind the building to catch water from the slope. There is a dead end yard inlet on the other end.

Personally I hate square knockout boxes, I prefer round structures with pre-cast/cored holes as they are much easier to install. No cutting and it's a smaller hole to grout up. Engineer spec'd knockout boxes.



24" headwall set Friday. We're waiting on our special order weir box, it should be here Tuesday. There is a short piece of 24" HDPE coming out of the weir box that controls the water from the CMP detention system.

Whoever builds your boxes does a nice looking job. I am not a fan of knockouts either. We take a lot of time to get the hole just right and try to grout around the pipe. Takes a few more minutes to make the hole but is faster on seal up.

LC that's a Foley Products box. IMO they make the best structures and RCP. They have a casting yard in AL 20 miles away.

Hanson used to have a casting yard locally but shut it down last year and consolidated it with another yard in north AL. I don't understand that business reasoning but it opened the door for Foley.

The CMP and HDPE came from Southeastern Culvert in north GA.

Sucks on the lack of rain. I don't know where we stand but when the rain finally did come it has come all at once.

We have two local outfits that build boxes as well as Hanson and Tindall. The one local company does some real nice work , the other builds junk. It is embarrassing to even have the boxes on the job. We don't use them but sometimes if we are subbing a job we get stuck using them because they are cheap.

Seems like the quality of rcp has gone down hill over the past few years. Might be they are trying to keep up with demand.

Yeah we've got a local shade tree producer that creates pure garbage - literally. Used them on one auto parts store, one of the boxes had rags and plastic bags cast into the side.

There are pics of those structures back thread. The risers were different sizes, horizontally not vertically which made a really **** poor structure.

kshansen ... Had a deal like that ... The kicker was at the end of the year, the vendor would return a discount based on the annual purchase. Don't know if it was 50% (as in your example) or if there were tiers or minimums involved.

LOL Kshansen, old math or new math it didn't make sense to me either. The yard they shut down was in a suburb of Birmingham with good access to interstates in a growing area. They consolidated that yard with a yard 30 miles north of the metro area. The yard they shut down made RCP, pre-cast manholes/structures and bridge beams.

We had a fairly productive week considering the site received 3-3/4" of rain in a 4 day period.

Clipping the bottom of the excavation for the underground detention system. The det. system is in the parking lot. 279 cutting fine grade.



This is the 1/2 way mark. The pipe length is 161' LF including the manifolds.



One of many reasons why I like zero swings. 321 went in to bench the right side of the excavation down.




Fabric down, subgrade approved and ready for a layer of #57 stone.

The third load of pipe arrived and we immediately seen an end section connecting to the manifold was backwards.



Had to lay it out to get a pic for the office folks.



South end of the det system manifold in place. Weir box set in the background. The weir box will detain the water within the system and allow it to release slowly. There is a 4" hole in the baffle inside the box, seen in the pick. There is also a 10" hole above the 4" and the baffle is 1.5' below the top of the structure to allow for large flows to pass through.

The stub going towards the rock box is for the buildings roof drains.



I'll give it to the CMP manufacturer. We notified them Wed. morning when the wrong piece of pipe arrived, they fab'd up a new piece and had it to us Thursday morning.

The manhole in the left of the pic is for a curb inlet.

Hauled some junk to the county landfill today, spring cleaning and all.

The county's new 836K compactor, it's a beast!

On a side note the operator in the D65 has been pushing garbage at the landfill ever since I've been hauling stuff there over the last 20 years. He's one heck of a landfill dozer operator, just notice the clean unloading area in front of the working face.

There is alot of work going on in Trussville which is fine by me other than the 1 hour or longer commute depending on traffic. I live south of the metro area, traffic is a bitch to put it nicely on 65 south of 459 all the way to Montgomery.

Actually, it's more like I'M the HEF whore, I GET AROUND!

There is a NS line that runs from a little farther South then Trussville all the way up to Chattanooga and it pretty much follows 59. I worked that one for a couple of months, in fact a couple of years ago, that area got hit with a snow storm, virtually nothing in Birmingham, yet up in Gadsden we got 8 inches that night, interesting driving the next day.

I haven't been there for a while now, but isn't that area always busy traffic wise? I know I always regretted driving around there in a truck.

The whole Birmingham metro traffic situation is a mess for such a small city. Currently Granite is re-constructing the 65, 59/20 interchange downtown.
