Hey all!

Since I started Fly-by-Night debris hauling this spring, I have gotten 4 or 5 calls asking if I can haul off trailers/mobile homes.

Have always had to turn em down because all I have is a 1/2 ton with racks, and now a box van with lift gate, AND they usually dont have any paper work on the trailer.

I got a call again this morn from a realtor I have worked with before and she said she has a double wide WITH title and a colapsed roof!

And she wants me to give her an estimate on gettin rid of it.

Im afraid its still over my head in many ways but dang, I hate to keep turning away business when I dont get much business as a new startup anyway.

Anybody here have any thoughts on this situation, or experiance with doing this?

I sure would appreciate any help.

As always thank you.

Five gallon can of gas and a book of matches. Apply gas liberally inside trailer modules, strike & throw match in puddle of gas. Run like hell!......

double wides pack nicely into 2, 30 yard dumpsters. 1 can goes out heavy, the next one right. and the frame can be cut up for scrap$$$. i fit one in a a single 30 yarder but had to help push it on the rolloff cause it pulled the front tires of the ground ... who says peterbilts dont do wheelys you should of seen the drivers face. it was his 2nd day.

There may be some extra money in the copper wiring & possibly the axels & tires if they are still under it. You can get anywhere from $40-$75 per axle.
If the soffitts & gutter are aluminum you can get some money out of that too. I have a continuous gutter machine & the money from the scrap will surprise most. Most double wides will have $50-$100 worth of scrap aluminum. Don't be afraid to throw a price out. Realize you will be bidding against bigger companies with higher overhead, so you may be able to make some good money. Just remember to scrap EVERYTHING you can. There may even be a furnace or circuit panel you could sell in the paper or at a flea market. Since you have worked for her & she called you back, she must be happy with your work. Good Luck

I have done one trailer demo and let me tell you it was ALLOT of work. The amount of work to strip the aluminum skin off isn't worth it. The wiring in those trailers is usually aluminum. The copper piping is worth some money but again your spending lots of time stripping it out.

You said these are double wides so there is no axles under them the frames are only good for scrap the steel is thin.

Surfer Joe has the right idea get some gas get a fire going burn the guts out of the inside. Once its burn't then separate the metal etc and what ever didn't burn haul to the landfill the metals haul to a scrap recycler.

You get that old 2x2 wood construction and wood paneling burning it will burn like a oven even some of the aluminum might melt.

I went to look at this thing today. Oof!

When she said the roof had colapsed she wasent just a kidding, I dont think I could even get inside of it.

I did peek into a window and it looks just to be roof and carpet and LOTS of bees!

No utilitys where ever hooked up. This property is rustic to say the least 14 miles out of town in the forest in a man made hole for some reason.

No axles no tounges.

She called me this morning about 9 am and wanted a BID this afternoon.

I told her it was not possible and that I was making calls and leaving msgs but I could not and would not try and give her an estimate or bid without knowing the costs.

If she doesnt like it tough titty I guess. I may not want to continue working with somebody with these expectations.

Im a good worker (lots of references) but this time table aint going to happen.

If I was in the demo business then maybe, I would (or should) know a lot more about it.

The closest competition, if there is any, would be 100 miles away.

Theres no demo outfits here, hell, theres not even any companys MOVING mobiles around here. I guess Spokane probably has some, but nothing here anymore.

I was thinking of renting a mini ex with a thumb and seeing if I could get a 30 yard dumpster and just torch up the frame for scrap, but theres NO scrap recycle place around here, and most people cant get sunshine (waste management) to rent out their dumpsters anymore either.

I have gotten a LOT of hauling jobs cause my customer couldnt get a dumpster for some reason. I know I have tried renting them over the years and have never been able to.

They say that either they all are rented out to contractors OR "we dont service that area"???

So I guess that leaves me with hiring a dump truck and driver?

I dont have any idea what that might cost.

Most of the trailer could be sent to the landfill/transfer station in a dump truck.

It would be 50 miles round trip, from mobile to dump, back to mobile.

I dont think I would even try recycling anything mainly because theres nowhere to take it.

But with the roof in the way of everything, It would be better time spent just tearing it up and sending it off.

Burning it would be awesome! I actually mentiond that to the very first job I did, they also wanted me to demo a mobile. When I went back up there, it was a smoldering pile of aluminum, dont know what he did with if and the frame lol.

It has been in the triple digits with a red flag alert. They will hardly let you just GO into the woods, burning would land me in prison!

Which is another thing I was going to tell her, I might be able to get the mini ex up there and tear it all up and get rid of it, but torching the frames will definitely have to wait till closer to winter. Theres no water or anything up there, just woods, bears, and a nasty old double wide with no axles and no tounge.

I didnt tape it, but I would guess maybe 20' by 40'? pretty close anyway.

Easy access all the arounr it, with the ex, not a dump truck.

Well hope this paints a better picture for you.

Thanks for all your help and if ya got any other ideas for me, please let me have em!

OK, OK. 2 gallons of gas, just one match. One reliable witness that will swear you weren't within fifty miles of the place when it self-combusted.

If its that high in the fire rating I wouldn't be doing anything because any little bit of sparks could ignite a grass fire.

A excavator with a bucket and thumb can make short work of a demo I did a little 20' trailer with a excavator I started with the roof tin pealed that off then I started with the sides then the floor last trailer frame. It didn't take long and it was fun I was surprised I got to do the job.

From what you said I would probably walk away from that job. If the person is pushing for a price means they are trying to do it cheap as possible.

Tell them wait for winter and go in and lite the trailer up bring the weenie roast sticks get some poisonous gasses cooking your hotdog :D

The job requires a machine of some sort its too much work done manually by hand. A 160 sized machine could have that done in a hour you could probably do it with a 9 ton machine something like a PC-80 Komatsu sized machine.

You also need 30 or 40 yard bins you can have them on the ground easy to load. A regular dump truck can't carry enough and if you say this is way out in the boonies a dump truck running back and forth with half of what a 40 yard bin can carry isn't worth it.

coolride, tell here ten grand and 1/2 up front. Have a rental company send you in a small excavator with thumb . Then a dumpster company two 30 yard roll offs . Buy a big cigar and have a fun couple of days. Thats a reasonable price and you should make six grand depending on how much the cigar costs. :usa

Hahahaha thats funny BECAUSE, I am waiting on a callback from WM to find out the cost of two 30 yard roll offs.

Already called the rental company and priced out the mini ex for four days!

Only thing I missed was the cigar! (I just quit last Jan 1st) Maybe I'll get a stick of gum. Lol

coolride, make sure the mini ex. is large enough to reach over the side of the dumpsters and capable of packing the debris in a little . A small to med size machine will make your life a little easier also if you have to bend up the trailer frame or move a dumpster around a little. Those dumpsters will prolly average you around 600- 800 each with mixed debris. We figure them at 1000 each to be safe and make a little on them. Good luck

Thank you double "D"

Im just learnin about this stuff. I dont remember the #size but there is a mini/med size with thumb that I rented last year to tear up our old deck and do some digging with. I THINK it will be big enough but I'll keep checkin around till I know more for sure.

It rents for $250 a day and I THINK they said it weighs about 10 or 11 thousand pounds? I did not need to tow it here (my place) from the rental place as I only live a few blocks and it was easier to just drive it lol.

Thanks again and I will keep ya updated.

In the jobs thread, there are some pics of my Takeuchi 135 tearing up a 60' single wide.

A couple things I've found:

My Takeuchi with the ripper tooth will pulverize a 60' mobile home in about 1/2 an hour.

I loaded 1 40 yard can and 1/2 of another before lunch.

The frame was hooked to my truck and hauled home to be used for a snowmobile bridge for the local club.

The lot was final graded, gravel added to the driveway, cans hauled and entire area mulched with hay before 4 pm. 8 1/2 hour day.

Found it! https://www.heavyequipmentforums.com/Forum/showthread.php?t=497&page=12&highlight=projects

Just for a note, I think I charged him $1000 or so, he paid all disposal fee's. It was a slow day and he happens to be a friend, so I cut him some slack.

I have done 3 double wides so far.
First one the owner thaught he was going to save some money and burn it first then have me clean up what was left. Big mistake. Waste Management would take a complete trailer on wheels for $400 per. That would have been $800 for a doubble wide. Tow co. would tow them there for $200 each half. or $400 for both. I figured 1 dy for me to make sure tires would roll and hitch was solid, disconect utilities. 1 day for me then was $1000. for a total of $2200.
But when burnt it all had to be loaded into a 10 yard truck with my 18,000 lb TB070 ex.
took 3 days form off load to clean up all the nails and grade site.
That was $3000 for me and $57,000 for Waste Management @ 7 cents a pound.

Second one whent to dump complete and bill was $2300 total.

Third one when in back of truck, total of 4 loads but not burnt first. only thing is it was all wet from rain so dump fee again was high. Total bill there was around $5,000.

If you are not busey then someware around $5K. but if you are busy then the $10,K sounds better.

good luck and take pictures.

Regarding the dumpster contents getting wet--I'll salvage some long 2x6's,8's 10's, whatever--joists,rafters,dont matter--place some blocking on the ends, place long boards on them to establish pitch and then throw a tarp across so rain water runs off,not into the toothpicks I just made.Burns me up to pay for water.

Thanks all for the great help and replies.

Waste Management wants $42.50 for delivery to the sight for a 30 Yard.
Service per haul is $146.50. (Should be emptied twice)
$7.30 per day rent
$5 per mile delivery charge every mile after the first 5 (in my case it would total $40)

Total 0f $793. IF I understand right, they want a $400 deposit FIRST and that will come out of the $793 so TECHNICALLY it would be $393.00 PER dumpster (I figured 2) plus $45 a ton at the dump. (who knows how much?)

I figured $2000 for a 30Y dumped twice. Should cover my hide!

$2000

Minie Ex $225 a day x 3 days = $675 This a "something 121", rental outfit said it would be perfect for what I want to do, 10,000 lbs anyway. $150 tot delivery both ways.

$2825

Fuel for ex (17 gal per day at $3.OO A GAL =$160

= $2985

Labor $40 per hour for myself x 3 days (24 hrs) = $960

= $3945

Tax on $3945 is .076 (here) =$299.82

=$4244.82

ANYYYYYWAY here is what I gave them.

"Bid/Estimate for removal of double-wide mobile home w/collapsed roof from property approx. 13 miles from Colville Wa on (blank Rd) - $4250

$2000.00 down payment/deposit due when work begins
$2250.00 balance due upon job completion.

Job will include: Removal of condemned double-wide mobile home from property.
The mobile home is resting on concrete blocks which are not to be removed. However, Fly-By-Night is not to be held responsible if some of the concrete blocks are damaged in the process of removing the mobile home.

The price of the job covers all costs, including labor, dump fees, equipment rental, fuel, and taxes.

Work will begin when the current fire dangers have lessened and the burn restrictions have been lifted.

This bid must be accepeted or rejected within 30 days of today's date.

thank you for contacting us. We appreciate your business.

I demo'd a trailer last fall, the guy wanted to bury it on site, so I dug a hole about the size of the trailer, skidded the trailer over by the hole, and knocked it off the frame into the hole, set the frame aside, packed the hell out of the hole, backfilled, packed the hell out of it some more, graded and I was done!
