help 262 skid

i have a CAT 262 skid steer got two problems. it has a hard start just cranks and cranks and cranks and is not starting at this time, did when they brought it in the shop. and then also there is either a oil leak or hydraulic leak in the engine compartment between the oil filler cap and the radiator, the lines that run under the radiator are covered with build up, my question is how wld i test the lines to see which is leaking? but tanks for any comments on these two questions. ryan shurley

Ryan, are your glow plugs working?.

With your oil leak the 262 will blow hydraulic oil out the filler cap if it has been over-filled. I suggest doing a good degrease and pressure clean so you can have a really good look.

This time of year in Georgia, the glow plugs shouldn't be necessary. My guess is the fuel solenoid, either it is bad or there is a break in the wiring to it somewhere. I'd give it a quick snort of ether and see if it fires, if it fires and shuts down immediately you're not getting fuel delivery.

My 268B had fuel delivery problems. Would start OK, but would not run well above idle. There is a electric relay down by the electric fuel pump which the connection got a little corroded. Disconnect the relay and see if connection is rusty. I replaced the relay, put dielectric grease on the connection and turned upside down so water could not get in it. Problem solved.

I had exactly the same problem on my 248B. You could get out and wriggle the relay and she'd fire right up again....for awhile. Did same, put in new relay mounted the correct way and the thing didn't fill up with water when it was cleaned.

Do you have a hydraulically driven fan? On mine the shaft seal was leaking so I replaced the seal, leak dried up.

thanks for all replies it was the fuel pump. and i have not figured the oil leak out but it might be what bob said the fan is hydraulicly controlled so that is more than likely the cause. Got to get it cleaned up today and see if i can find the leak. but thanks to all for your help.
