I don't think that's really funny.

Im thinking the same thing. Thought the management of this site has been making moves to keep these posts from blowing up. Now would be a good time to end this, at least thats what i gather from steves post yesterday

Right now is really tough job wise in CA. Unfortunately he may have hit the nail on the head. When times get tough you need to sell some toys to pay the bills. From what I understand some local 3 Journey have not worked in 8 or 9 months. Unemployment only goes so far, & for so long. I think is was a tastless joke.

With that said, there are some counties here in CA that have unemployment at 20% right now, so it is not just construction jobs, it is everywhere.

I keep reading articles about laid off lawyers waiting tables, former executives pushing lawnmowers, etc.

My wife has a Bachelors in Planning Geography. (pretty much she can win Sim City in her sleep!)...2 classes away from her Masters!

She has not been able to get a job since last Aug. Mc D's wont even hire her, she is looking for house cleaning jobs now. We have seen crime go WAY up. Where I work cars are being stolen out of the parking lot in daylight (Best Buy In Stockton).

I don't know the difference between recession & depression, but things are looking really scary here in the short term. I know things will rebound. Markets usually go in 7 year cycles, so we only have 3-4 years to ride this sucker out...hopefully.

Talking to the folks at the local 3, they have never seen so many Journeys on the out of work list for so long. That does make me feel better. If they said this is a common occorance, I might be shaken a bit. Union or non, Jobs are slim pickens right now.

There are a few things that would concern me about California. 1 The way the state spends money. 2 CARB, think about the costs associated with the ever changing emission requirements. That certainly hurts contractors, to the point where a lot of the bigger ones are looking for more work out of CA. Im really waiting to see excavation contractors and truck owners to tell California, good luck, you want something moved, or built, you can do it yourself, were going elsewhere.

That being said, I think things are looking fairly secure for folks in the trades. Lets face it, much of todays generation wants to sit in front of computer in an air conditioned office. Not many of them really seem to want to bust their tails outside in the dirt and weather. All these people still need roads, bridges, sewer and water systems, buildings, and their homes built. The big thing you need to remember is to put cash away. When things are rolling coals and you're making money hand over fist, put it away. I always try to live on a budget that is equivalent to my unemployment wages. This way when things are slow, I have a pile of cash in the bank, and very little in the way of bills.

That's exactly right Turbo. We count on the membership to conduct themselves appropriately, we can't be everywhere 24/7 to monitor what's going on here at the Board. If someone throws a jab out in an attempt to get under someone's skin, and then a number of members get up in arms over it then the offensive member has accomplished his goal. If it's ignored, the thread carries on as it was originally intended and perhaps the offender is discouraged from attempting again.

Thanks for helping out Turbo!

Carry on.

Hey Soldati06, I`m local 3 since 1982, true the work picture is a little bleak right now in our area, but its not only our state. For most folks that work in the dirt in the north state winter is always slow anyways. The folks I do a lot of my work with say they are bidding like crazy right now with a ton of new projects showing up daily. Most of the work showing up now is public or highway work with little or no private stuff. I have seen this happen several times over the yrs. No way to predict the work picture in 3 yrs but I would suspect you`ll find many opertunites when you get home. I myself have been working steady all along and feel blessed to do so. I`m working on a project in your backyard at Travis AFB. Thank you for your service. Stay safe.

Let me be clear fellas.. my coment was NOT to offend any union workers..But some may recall I usedto live in California. The reason I moved back to Pa was lack of Good work......That was just a kinda matter of fact comment..I have 3 friends in the union in Nor- Ca and they have been laydoff for a year. the pickins are verry slim. And it is a damm shame..I loved Cali but hade to move back here to find work. Some may remember I spent 6 months in New Mexico away from my family workng just to pay for a house I was'nt even enjoying..and now i'm working 200mls away from home..Just sick of things right now. But I keep plugin away..If you guys dont care for my comments i'll just stop posting picts and delete my profile..sorry if I offended anyone

Thanks for the clarification hoeman. One problem with these message boards is there's no way to tell what the intent of an author in what he posts, you don't hear tone of voice or see facial expressions and what seems innocent to one may seem offensive to another. Then that post can be left to stew for a time before the author returns to explain as you have done here.

What we ask is for everyone to have a little patience when reading and give others the benefit of the doubt. If you do come across something that is obviously over the line, then notify us either through PM or via the "Report Post" icon which is the little red/white triangle under the author's screen name. Don't hash it out on the Board.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I have enough drama in my life away from the Board than to have to deal with it here too.

It's all good hoeman, don't get your feathers ruffled.
