I own a 1998 JCB 208s and I'm pretty sure the starter and solenoid have gone bad. I have been having more difficulty each time I have had to start the machine, until the other day when I smelt I slight burn coming from under the hood. Anyways, I checked my battery and it is fully charged and I am getting 12v at the ignition wire. When I jump across the two terminals on the solenoid, I get sparks but nothing runs, and when I check for voltage with one lead in the braided cable (coming off the positive on the solenoid) and one lead connected to negative, I do not get any reading when I try to start the machine.

First, am I correct in my assessment that the starter motor and solenoid are both bad (sorry, I'm pretty new to troubleshooting my own equipment)?

Second, if they need replaced, is there an easy way to get to them without removing the engine? It seems that the starter motor is blocked in there pretty good, and I can't find a relatively easy way. I don't think it is directly accessible from under the hood without first removing the exhaust manifold and exhaust components, but I'm not sure if that is the proper way to do it. Any advice here would be greatly appreciated.

And finally, can anyone confirm if a Perkins part number: 2873K405 is the right starter motor for a 208s with a serial number in the 752500 range?

Thanks.

Mr Streeter was working with another man on the sea defences
A man has died from his injuries after he was run over by a bulldozer as he worked on a beach in West Sussex.

Police were called to West Sands Caravan Park, in Selsey, just before 0700 GMT to reports Michael Streeter had become trapped beneath the vehicle.

Mr Streeter, aged 60, from St Nicholas Road, Portslade, Brighton, was rescued by firefighters and taken to hospital by ambulance where he died.

He had been working on the sea defences on behalf of the Environment Agency.

A spokesman for the South East Coast Ambulance Service said: "We spoke to him on the phone and he was quite lucid, talking to our call operator but because of the nature of the injuries we believe he suffered a sudden cardiac arrest.

"The tide was coming in and the fire crew had to act quite quickly to get him out of harms way."

The incident is being investigated by Sussex Police and the Health and Safety Executive.

Slightly different report.
Bulldozer driver dies on Medmerry BeachPremium Article ! »View GalleryPublished Date: 20 November 2009
A man has been run over by his own bulldozer and killed on Medmerry Beach in Selsey today (Friday November 20).
The 60-year-old man was thought to be carrying out shingle replenishment work on the beach at 7am today.

Fire services and paramedics were called to the scene, but sadly the Environment Agency employee died in hospital after freeing himself from underneath the vehicle.

Toby Willison, Environment Agency Southern Regional Director, said: "We are deeply saddened by the news that a contractor working on behalf of the Environment Agency has died in an accident.

"It happened this morning - Friday 20th November - on the beach at West Sands Caravan Park, Selsey.

"Police were called to the beach shortly before 7am, after reports that a 60-year old man had been trapped by a bulldozer on which he was working.

"Initial reports suggested that he had freed himself and he was taken to St Richards Hospital, Chichester, where he was pronounced dead. The man was a contractor working on behalf of the Environment Agency, on routine shingle maintenance at the beach.

"We wish to express our deepest sympathies to all those affected by this tragic accident.

"The circumstances are being investigated by police and the Health & Safety Executive and a report will be submitted to the West Sussex Coroner. We shall, of course, offer any assistance to help with their enquiries."

Had a quick question about mounting a laser receiver on a dozer...

Currently i just welded a 1 1/2" drive coupling to the outside corner pocket on my D6R's blade and screwed in the pipe that held the reciever. This met my hopes of being simple and removable for when i didnt want the rod mounted to the blade. Also the drive coupling was out of the action and not likely to get bent/damaged.

The issue came that with enough vibration the weakest part of the pipe was the threads and eventually they gave out.

Has anybody seen a simple, easy, stout, removable way of mounting a recieving rod to dozer that they've been happy with?

someone around here is smarter than me trying to reinvent the wheel...

thanks in advance.

:Banghead JCB wiring problem ! :Banghead

My brother-in-law has a 210s up at his camp // future house in Maine. Machine always worked great and has forks, backhoe buckets, and a great loader.

Last year apparently he had a wiring melt-down in the harness as it runs from the cab to the engine compartment. Whoever routed the harness the way they did through the unit sure didn’t do a good job on this one.

I went up and looked at it to see if I could help him out. WOW.. it was bad. He had already tried repairing everything, but it just fired again.

I started to jack-up the cab a little to get some of the harnesses out. Got a few pulled here and there, but WOW-WOW a lot of carbon and oxidized copper.

Why do the JCB’ers wire the way they do? It looks like they have everything wired all the way to the switched item, and then send another wire back to their common ground as well. SO to switch a bulb you would have a thin wire coming off of the post for the starter, running all the way back (around all of the cab’s sharp and/or vibrating corners) to the dash board –to the switch, then return all the way to the light bulb, then return from there all the way back to ground.

Why didn’t they just setup a positive buss-bar being feed by a single BIG wire in the cab and fuse each circuit off of there? Likewise with the grounds? I mean it seems a lot of extra works and materials to do it there way. It is not like there is only a few circuits. There are tons of them to all of the sending units, switches, sensors, etc.

I imagine that this is not the only JCB that had had it’s wiring pinched enough to cause this thermo-melt-down. Other than spend thousands on getting another harness; has anyone rewired their unit back together once this happened with any success?

It would also help to get info on what circuits are needed to run and operate. Accessories like lights, heater, etc can wait until time allows. Once it is running and working I hope that these accessories can be fixed on special wiring-hang-around-the-campfire-trips. Nice to have something to focus on,,,, and an excuse stored in the back pocket.

It is too bad it is so far away, and I’m only remembering stuff from August as I sit here, but come spring –when his tenant is out- I expect to go back up and try to get it to run and operate some for him. Would really love some war-stories about your endeavors and/or advice.

As ALWAYS; I appreciate any time you may expend on this for me. Your suggestions (not wise-cracks) are greatly appreciated in advance.
