Yeasterday,i was dusting off my manitowoc 4100 and was getting ready to take some nice pictures of it to show my unlce at a christmis eve party tonight,well anyway heres some pictures of my pride and joy in my collection it based on a real contractor in nj that he works for.

It is an awsome model,you should consider buying it,all 4 versions of this crane are awsome,If i had the room i would get a custom barge for it.

I see the Vicon logo on the cab, and have seen it on a lot of Manitowocs, but what exactly is Vicon? Is it some type of conversion?

stretch,i know vicon stands for varible independent control,since i am only a teenager i dont know what that stands for,somthing to do with holding back the fluids in the engine or something.

Nice Crane, My wife bought me one for Christmas last year. I've never operated or saw one with the offset boom so I took the links out to make a standard boom. I've also got the jib but don't know if I'll ever put it on. Very seldom would you see Crane on a Barge with a jib on it.
The Vicon system is for load lowering. Instead of a power down where you would release the lever and set the brake, shove the lever into power down and release the brake to lower the load the Vicon system applies power to the load determined by engine speed and how far you have the lever toggled in. On the older Manitowocs it was on a separate lever they called a Johnson bar. To pic a load you toggled in the drum lever then pulled on the Johnson bar while adding throttle til the load started to raise. When you were high enough you could let up on the Johnson bar until the load stopped raising. If you wanted to lower the load you let up a little more and it would start to come back down. Adding or subtracting throttle also increases or decreases line pull. Its a good system for making a lot of heavy pics. You can get in a rhythm where its like a yo yo. You never have to use the brake to hold the load. The newer Cranes had the Vicon system incorporated into the hoist lever. A couple draw backs to the system is you couldn't float the load. If you boomed up it would line up to. The other draw back was it required quite a bit of weight to work properly so on the older cranes that didn't have power down you had to free fall everything light. Sometimes it was hard to let things down gently. I know some of the newer Manitowocs had both a power down and a Vicon system. I've never ran one with both though.
Hope this doesn't confuse you to much. I'm having a hard time to explain it. If you have any questions I'll try to answer them.

Thanks Lash and Jeff. cat, I'm only a teenager too so I'm trying to learn all I can about this stuff! I've seen it on a lot of Manitowoc cranes and drags, so thanks for letting me temporarily threadjack here...:rolleyes: But nice model anyway, looks like it's ready for work!

It wasent that hard just make sure you don't do it under tension. The hardest part was the equalizer because it arrived tangeled like a rats nest.

Awesome pics! i have the same model but unfortunately it is still sitting in a box in my closet. Im waiting to move before i build it (and still have an 18000 to disassemble), so it was nice to see some pics other than the ones TWH uses to model it! they need to come out with a pile driving attachment for this model!

I agree with you,the real compay that owns the 4100 that I replicated is a pile driving company. I really wish TWH or some custom model builder made a pile driver in high quanity to sell at diecast retails stores. I made one ot of plastic before but it was really small and really crappy.

help !! I just started a job running a 4000 manitowoc with The Johnson Bar

Why not back down a heavy load in manual with torque converter and throttle
verses Johnson bar in air mode?
What are the pitfalls if any?
I understand the system for light loads.. but it seems like you have more control in manual for heavy loads with just using the brake and throttle with torque converter.
Am I missing something??
