How long did it take you to dig the first one out with the bucket? I use the backhoe like you did with the second when I come up with these jobs. Still takes a while with a tree that size!

steve,

i dont remember exactly, but i was also lowering the grade of the area. i think i was working on it pretty much all day.

i didn't use the backhoe because it didnt come in yet, but like you said it still takes awhile.

I did alot of that this summer But the few i took out where much bigger My 580L could not even lift them. But it does take awhile to dig arounf them and snap the suport roots but then they pop right up.

That a nice trick for a machine that size.
When my machine is too small for the stump, I will leave the tree on the stump, cut enough roots to push it over and the weight of the tree does the rest,...... almost.

That's my favorite way to remove stumps too--leave them attached to the tree.

If somebody is having the trees cut down before I get there I ask them (for the bigger ones, like 18" or larger around), to have at least five or six feet of trunk left on them, but eight or ten feet is better. Once you dig around them and break most of the roots, with that much trunk left you just give a good push on the trunk and the stump comes out pretty easily.

Trying to take big stumps out that are cut close to the ground is *awful* hard on your machine, especially smaller models. I've cracked backhoe buckets trying to, and once saw a guy literally tear the bottom away from the side of the bucket on a 1450 Case track loader. He was trying to use the corner tooth of the bucket to pry a big stump out.
