Im from the east coast how hard is to find a place to hunt in the midwest where it wont cost thousands of dollars to lease? I am just looking for about 3 to 4 days of hunting a yr. Is leasing hunting rights a big market for farmers out there now?

I'm not exactly sure about the laws of hunting rights, but we own about 200 acres of farm fields and woods where we usually just require that a hunter notifies us or seeks our permission before going to hunt in our woods. With a state permit, of course.

Some areas about all the land is leased for hunting. A lot of farmers leased their ground, or have a regular group that hunt their ground or will not let anyone hunt.
There is still some farmers that have not leased their land but they are far and few between. You are better of wanting to hunt deer because they do a lot of damage in the Midwest.

just a heads up on this i was talking to the local missouri conservation agent and he said they are writting more tickets now using the telecheck system to check your deere and turkey and other wildlife kills becaus they tag when you buy your tag to when you call it in if its less than 2 hours between when you kill your deer to when you call it in it gets logged on a list and a conservation agent comes and pays you a visit i saw the list and some of the times where 5 min from time they bought the tag to the time they killed the deer tracked it and called it in others were 6 min 10 min 30 min some are feasible but if you are one that kills the deere then gets the tag be smart about when you call it in they can confinscate the deer/turkey/kill to your gun and truck aslo you can take a trip to jail and hefty fines for poaching

That whole new computer system is dumb if you ask me. Think about how many deer dont get called in because of it. As for killing the deer then buying the permit, That is just insane!!!!!! In my state a resident archery permit is 26 dollars and that gets you an either sex tag and an antlerless tag. For 26 dollars, I just dont see someone being that cheap, or dumb not just to buy the permit!:eek: For 26 dollars, even the meat off a fawn will be worth more then 26 bucks!!!!!

yeah i know what you mean the tag is cheap and so what if you don't get a deer on that day out you still have the rest of the season. plus i would rather get stopped with a tag on me then have no tag a deer in the bed and get all my stuff confinscated go to court pay fines and hope they are nice enough to give me my stuff back also not loose your hunting privaliage for life. which i don't see how some stuff is a privilage like hunting voting and driving its like they can say what you can and can't do

Where I live hunting leases for the year are around $50.00 per acre.

hunting ground is scarce, especially if your just a stranger off the street. too many horror stories of guys that just dont know local custom.

$50-125/acre in our general area for a lease

across the river in Pike County Illinois where the big shots, ball players, celebs go it can get wild over there...

your best bet might be with an outfitter (assuming your not morally opposed to outfitters), rather than trying to approach a land owner. a neighbor of mine is an outfitter. here is his website http://www.strutrut.com/ there are many others....

outfitter -$1500 = 1 weekend hunt

renting - $1500 = ~10-25acres for 1 year. different areas charge differently

owning - $1500 = umm no auctions around here since farm/general economy shot craps, but roughly that'd buy you 1/2acre

your guess is as good as mine on whats the best deal... we raise hogs, so i'd tell you if it just about the meat, buying pork from your local meat locker is the best. but i'm assuming there is some pride/adventure that is tough to put a dollar value on.

jokes aside, in our area foreigners rarely get in on a landowner. bout have to know someone, or at least a relative in the area that can put in a good word to get the door open. there are a few guys that will advertise a lease, but they are looking for the big bucks, and i aint talking deer....

in the past, issues with guys not knowing the property boundaries, driving 4-wheelers all over kingdom come, cutting fences, and generally just being disrepectful have gotten a fair amount of ire from the locals

Well im a landowner in the east. We have 500 acres with small beef operation. Hunting here is crazy. I allow 12 friends hunt in trade for farm help occasionly because they have no where else to go. We try to manage the deer to grow nice mature bucks but everyone around knows this so there is a wall of orange around my entire property line. I would just like to hunt in the midwest to say i did it. I would love to just come out and see the country. Never been past West Virginia. Gone are the days of doing anything that is not commercialized.

Hunting leases have got to be popular around here. We just let people hunt on are land for free. It may not be a money maker but its good public relations.

just a local past experience but might keep you or someone else from a sour situation... i have heard a story or two about guys letting people hunt, then somebody twists an ankle in a fence post hole or something off the wall and the hunters are now holding you liable. (even worse is the guy who is trespassing but still sues, because you didnt have the property signed correctly) generally the lease guys have a clause in there to transfer liability. yes i know this all sounds rediculous but the society we live in requires this when dealing with others. unless it is with very close friends!

Its with fairly close friends and relatives. One of our landlords was hunting last year on our own property and fell on ice and broke a wrist. He wasnt going to sue, but if that was a stranger that couldve been bad. Thats why its close friends and relatives only. I shouldve been more clear.
