Hey guys I was wondering if you could help me out? My uncle is looking at a machine he wants to get for digging his own footings and build of his own house in ct here and he was looking at a 1988 Case 580 K T.L.B. My question is this are they any good, what should he look out for, it says the front bucket opens which I am asumeing it means it is a 4in1 bucket. The machine looks decent to almost perfect condition. if you guys got any info on these send it my way.
PS : the previous owner states it has low hours, full cab,all new hoses, and the extendable dipper, I have not seen it up front just what I saw in the pic for the add. Also he is asking 15K for it is that a good price?

Im ight be bias but I like Case. The 580K is a good machine I think that year had problems with the gas tanks or something leaking in that front compartment.$15K well That's probably in the ball park you can check similar machines out on www.machinerytrader.com it listes them by make and model. But if he is going to use around his own house i would not worrie too much about it as long as everything is running good and there is no visable signs of anything leaking.Just to give you and idea there was a case 580C 2wd std hoe new paint full cab selling for $7,500 here and it looked like the guy was doing the same thing digging his own to save some $$.

I have an 88 580K...no problems except the normal hoses. I need to add a shim or 2 in the extendahoe when i have time.
find out how many hours are on it.
did they put new hoses on the extendahoe cylinder?(inside the dipper tube)...those are the hardest ones to change.

well my uncle is not buying that one. The owner stated it is a 1980 not an 1988 and he is trying to tell my uncle that there is only 54 hours on it. Now i know machines sit but I have a hard time beliving that a 20+ year old machine only has 54 hours on it even if it was just for home use it should have more on it then that wouldnt you think? Also he did not want to move on the price at all not even a couple hundred and my uncle did not want to spend 15k on a 20 + year old machine when for a little mor he could get a newer machine. Any way thanks for you guys help and the answers to the questions, I knew I could count on this site for all my questions. :drinkup

Yea, for that kind of money you should be able to get a 10 to 15 year old machine with some life left in it.
If that machine had 54 hours on it you'd know in a heart beat! The paint would hardly be worn off the buckets!! That's a real hard one to believe.

The 54 hour claim is a obviously false, but it could still have low hours. He did say all the hoses were replaced (too much time sitting and not enough working?), the next question would be how much other stuff would need to be replaced? It's probably a good idea to pass on this one.
