we looked at a couple demo jobs. one was a 15,000 sq ft church that was built in 1897, now that the new church had been built they wanted to removed the old ( in rough chape) church as they used up alot of the parking lot when they built the new. Unfortunatly we did not win the bid on that one.
next one we looked at was demoing a 3500 sq ft house to the slab so they could build a bigger house back... owner still wants to do it.. just don't know when:cool:

Sorry Wolf, not very cool or out of the ordinary, but we have a burned house demo to do tomorrow. About 1000SF with a crawspace, should take about 2 days to complete and clean up. Not very exciting but it pays the bills.:drinkup I'll try to take some pics.

Is it just me or do you like to plunder through the stuff as your taking it down. You'd be amazed at all the things you can find!
Remember save all the copper pipe, it's around $3.40+ a pound here:drinkup

Absolutely! I demo'd an old trailer a couple of weeks ago and just started to throw the scrap metal to the side. The second to the last 30 CY going out I loaded it up. We ended up with a full 30 worth of metal siding, the thin trailer frame, tin, old BBQ grills, chicken wire, a couple of old water heaters and .... well basically rusted junk. Went to the scrap yard and the can weighed in at 5820lbs which @ $.10 per LB was $582. Not a windfall by no means but there wasn't a landfill bill and the trucking time was the same.
Still got the copper water pipe in the back of my truck.:D
CM1995 and Dirtman:
I think it's cool that you guys are saving all the scrap and making good $$$ off it. The tree huggers would approve of your recycling efforts. LOL. Hopefully, the strong market will keep up to make it worth your while.
Too bad you didn't get to wreck that 1897 church, Dirtman. That would have been fun, and I bet there was some cool stuff in that to salvage. Scrap value plus some stuff with antique value too, I'll bet. Is the old church down already?

No it's still standing and I'm glad that we did not get it, you know churches want the most for the least amount of money. it was planned for June 1... which has come and gone. They are having problems with removing the asbestos and there's probably lead paint on the old wooden siding that is covered up it with newer siding. Anyways we have plenty of other things to do... I have trees to knock down so i'm happy:D
I'll try to get some pictures when they ever get around to demo:Pointhead

Eric:
that dome is huge, even next to a huge excavator! what on earth is it? an observatory? a reactor? weird looking structure, but great looking demo machines.
how do you go about attacking something like that with the hoes? what's the strategy?

Wolf,
this project is a Nuclear Reactor containment building, 208' tall, 140' across with 3' thick concrete all around.
I cannot give out any details on the take-down method, as it's the first structure of it's kind that's been taken down, the process is secret.
the demolition bucket on the loader has long since lost it's nameplate, but I believe it was made by Peterson

Wow! That's a huge building. Would love to work on a project like that. Anyhhow, I'm looking around for some heavy equipment movies on the internet. Found a demolition movie in Italy: www.myhitachiexperience.com  Some operator talks about his experience with a zx240-3. I also saw some nice pics of large excavators.
Anybody has other sites for me with movies of heavy equipment?

Maybe this job fits the unusual catagory, demolition of bricks at launch complex 39A @ Cape Canaveral NASA. We had to design a bucket with a flat grade blade that could scrape bricks off the wall of the blast trench of the launch pad that the shuttle launches from. 6000 Bricks were blown off the wall last launch at 600 feet per second. Our job was to scrape the remaining bricks that were weak so a new application could be used.

In industrial demo we use them. The environmental clean up guys go thru the plant with a vacuum truck, and then pump into one of those tanks. Different chemicals sort themselves into different layers in the tank. Based off of whats heavier, ie, heavy metals would be on the bottom, water based would be in the middle, and oil based would be on top. Then you suck out the chemicals after they have sorted themselves out.

the blue trailers are tankers for the water we used while we scrapped the bricks off. The bricks had a rope material in the control joints that had 70% asbestos which we had to remove first. This required wet demo method, as you can see in the photos there is guy with a hose on a lift. The water was gathered by a pump and filtered then pumped in those tankers.

gotcha. i guess you'd have to have something like asbestos to handle the high heat. my grand dad has an old pair of asbestos welding gloves, he says they handle the heat like no other, just don't breathe around them!

Anybody been doing any cool demolition jobs this summer?
What kind of demo is going on?
Have you been busy? If so, what kind of work? Schools and stuff are usually big during the summer.
Any good pictures to post? Keep them coming.
Any interesting stories? Close calls?

Here's a video of pulling down the second of (3) 40 ft. steel towers, which we did last summer. Used a 130 ft. x 5/8 steel cable and my 450-J dozer

the most exciting part was catching my pant leg on fire while using the demo saw 12 inches from the top edge when setting the cable

Here's a few pics of the tanks after they were down. Took a week to prep them as we had to grind off hundreds of 3/4" bolts from the flange around the base and cut a few holes for cables.
Actually took the longest to cut them up into truck sized loads for scrap
Looks like they built some pretty fancy new houses right next to those tanks. No wonder the NIMBY's wanted them down.
Great pictures. Thanks for posting, and too bad about your pants leg. LOL

Here are some photos of a 100' tall concrete chimney that we dynamited. The chimney walls were 1' thick at the base and had a fire brick liner on the inside. The chimney was originally 170' tall. The brick building next to it is the boiler building which was still in use. There was a natural gas tank about the length of a semi trailer about 125' from the stack.

awesome shots. thanks for posting, and keep those great pictures coming folks.
I never remembered to post these, the city started off with their New Holland, but quickly ealized they were in over their head and called my buddy to assist them. Cause of the fire was never put out publicly....everyone had their own idea of what might have happened. But thats not for here, the rush was on, FD knew there was fire trapped between the walls on both sides, and was very concerned that it could quickly become un-manageable.

First series are of a Fire station we had to put a donut hole in. The histerical society demanded the penthouse remain unchanged so the GC had to get creative with his shoring.

Neat pictures Wawrecker. Looks like a pretty cool job. Why was the hysterical society getting so excited? What is so special about that firehouse? Looks pretty plain to me. Shoulda knocked the whole thing down. LOL.

Have one in the works we are setting up for right now. 5 houses, one bank, and two condo buildings. Might have some issues with it now though. Original bid for the condos showed 500 sq feet of friable ACM. After being awarded the bid, we got a final ACM report, the condos have 26,000 sq feet. The bid is for a unit price, but being it is 20% more than the original contract, owner reserves the right to rebid, pull the building, or renegotiate the contract. They may very well pull the condos from the contract because the ACM removal cost will double the original bid price.

Turbo, in what form is the ACM - insulation, floor tiles? Do you guys do abatement in house or sub it? Sounds like an interesting demo.
They ACM is in a sprayed ceiling texture. It was not expected to be ACM that was friable. We do not do abatement in house, so if the job proceeds as planned, we have to find a sub that is willing to wait 6-12 months. That is due to a change order moving at the speed of DOT.
The project is actually at a border crossing. There is going to be a new truck inspection plaza built. In order to do this, the DOT is buying up several city blocks to make room. There have already been 50 or so buildings removed. This is phase II, with phase III phase IV and phase V to follow this year.
There is potential to make decent money. That is if the DOT real estate department can speed up getting clear titles and they get these let out for bid. I took a look at phase I last year, and all the houses were in decent shape. No one had been messing with anything yet. That was until the first houses started to go. In the last 6 months the little fire bugs have been torching houses. Two of the houses we are to wreck have been stripped out. They started at the hot water heaters, and chases all the copper to the fixtures. They even have started to remove all the wiring. They have also grabbed any aluminum siding, gutters, and soffit that they could easily reach.
