View Full Version : Rock Drilling & Spliting
I am intrested in possibly getting into the rock drilling & splitting buisness. I have done a couple jobs all ready using air rock drills and expansive grouts and or hydraulic splitters and think there might be a market for it. It is very hard work and figure people would rather sub it out. I am in North New Jersey and some of the rock we have is very hard had to do a job for my friend the other day he had a 3500lb hammer on a case 9030 and i would not even scratch the rock. I had my laborers drill it with air rock drills nd used a hydrauli splitter to crack the rock. I am looking into getting a hydraulic rock drill for my mini excavator but it is a $30,000 attachment how would i bill for it by the day or by the job. I figure there are jobs which are to small to blast rock or to bring in a dedicated track drill where my mini with a drill attachment would do the trick. If any body knows more about this industrie or can help I would appricate it.

I know a guy thats in blasting.
From the scope of the jobs ive seen him on, he can pretty much blast anything, anywhere.
He did alot of the work in Hopatcong, when they were doing the sewers, right on thoes crowded narrow streets.
I just cant see a machine or that expansive grout being able to get some of North Jerseys real hard stuff, b/c I know hes had problems on some jobs. (although that soft stuff down in Chatham will go real easy) He always said, "I either look like a hero or an idiot" meaning that the job goes awesome and is drilled and blasted correctly the first time, or he has to go back and hit it again.
But im sure your idea of starting small is good (although 30 grand isnt small amount of money sometimes)
Maybe you should talk to some people at Tilcon or Weldon or any of the other 1 million quarries around here and see how the pros get rid of a massive amounts of rock in short order, im sure if you can make a contact there, they must be FILLED with VALUABLE info for your new venture.
To be succesful you really, really have to know your rock, where its gonna be, how hard its gonna be, ect.
