I just found out the hard way I shouldn't work on estimates late at night while sick with the flu. Essentially, I lost out on two jobs because I was tired and forgot to update my excel spreadsheet and correct one math error. Had I made the changes and correction, I probably would've gotten the bid. Oh well, I didn't want a couple of jobs worth a bit over $20,000 anyway :Banghead

I guess it does pay to double and triple check your numbers :yup I use an excel template to crunch numbers and then transfer the numbers to peachtree for the formal quote. What do the rest of you do for your bids or quotes? In the meantime, I think I'm going to work on my spreadsheet some more before I need to do another bid :crying

I do the same as you: use an Excel spreadsheet to crunch the numbers and then transfer the final number to the proposal, which is done in MS word. I too have found errors in my spreadsheet when I first set it up, but they were errors that would have cost me money.

According to the wife, I fuss over my proposals too much...

math errors on your excel spreadsheet? are you sure you have your cell formulas set up correctly? most common errors are with multiplication.
let's say you have quantity set up in cell a1.....cost per material in a2..to get the right rounding of #'s to come out the formula should read @round(a1*a2,2) the "comma 2" is telling it to round off to two decimal places...if you'd like, i could email you an excel spreadsheet i've set up and use all the time. my email address is geneday@iw.net
