This Versalift from deep south is in Beaumont TX on a turnaround right now to preform a 900 ton lift, they are replacing the vessel in the middle ( between the two booms ) with a new unit ( to the right of the versalift ) The lift is set for next week depending on weather.

The back boom unit looks kind of like the Demag I saw in Houston a few years ago.

Do you have any closer picts of the base and who is the company that owns the units?

The owner of the crane is http://www.deepsouthcrane.com/ I believe that their smaller versalifts are based on older Demags, but I think that they build the bigger one themselves.

I think that these are the 4 largest "mobile" cranes, if I am not mistaken only 2 of the for are true mobile (able to pick and carry) crawler cranes, those being the Terex-Demag and the Lampson LTL2600. I guess that is probably not really relevant when you can put enough boom in to reach from 1 county to the next! All 4 are amazing pieces of equipment!

Terex-Demag 8800-1 T @3527 ton.

Mammoet MSG - 50 --- 3070 tons

Next is the LTL 2600 --- 2600 tons.

Followed by the Versa-crane TC 36000 --- 2500 tons

Great photo MRM99! :)

We had a 28000 here last fall. It was nice to finally have a chance to see one. Here are the photos (http://www.equipmentimages.net/pg_imarathonrefinery.htm) I took of it.

I was working on a project a few years ago and saw a Demag 8800 in Mammoet's yard in Houston. They were putting it together for the first time.

I've worked on some big stuff but I was as impressed by that machine as any other I've ever seen.

Thanks for the photos all.

I'm a rigger for Wyatt Field Services. We're going to start assembly on the 36000 next week at Lyondell-Basell which was, until earlier this year, Lyondell Houston. We're replacing the Coke Drums at the 736 Coker. I believe the biggest lift is a little less then 800T w/rigging @ a 170' radius w/520' boom.

We did the same thing at Shell Deer Park last year. The biggest lift there was 820t @ 160', 420' boom.

Camille, the owner of Deep South, designed the Versa-crane series himself.

What Big Iron points out is mostly true. The 'Terex-Demag 8800-1' has 1764t capacity, but the 'Terex-Demag 8800-1 Twin' has a capacity of 3527t US. The thing is that the "twin" version is a ringer so it isn't a true crawler i.e. it can't pick and carry 3500t. What Big Iron also fails to acknowledge is that he copied and pasted part of my reply from this forum (http://cranetalk.com/ubb/Forum4/HTML/000110.html) word for word. He even used the pictures that I myself uplaoded to Imagevenue.

Anyway no harm done. Conclusion - the LTL 2600 is the only true crawler on that list and the Terex-Demag 8800-1 is a 1764t crawler but the twin boom 3527t version is a ringer. So the LTL 2600 is the biggest crawler crane there is as of right now.

The interesting thing is that those are just the rated capacities of these cranes. The only thing that caps them is the size of the drum and the number of parts of line that they can use. So if they could use a bigger drum with more cable then they could put more parts of line and raise the capacity. The boom strength and counter-weights are plenty sufficient to go well beyond their rated capacities, they simply just can't put anymore parts of line.

Actually, the CC8800 is not a ringer. A "future concept" that was shown at the factory at the introduction would be a ringer (see photo 3).

Al Jaber in Saudi Arabia is the first owner of a CC8800-1 Twin.

I stand corrected. I Did a little bit of digging before I made that post, but I somehow missed this. (http://www.demag24.com/r_en/default_1000.aspx) So now the LTL 2600 is the second largest crawler. There are also rumors afloat that Deep South is in the process of building a 4000t Versa-crane.

Thanks for the heads up on where the versa crane will be at, I'll have to drive by and take a look when they get it up. Any Idea of when they will lift the upper structure off of the coker?

Do they know why that crane came down yet?

Yes the short answer is it was boomed to high and went over backward.
