You just need the bill of sale, also make sure you have insurance & CDL licence. Also the truck needs to be registered in the state you are buying it from. Just don’t miss any scales and don’t break any laws you will be fine. It would be the same as if you were driving your car out of state. Also makesure the truck is road worthy,so the DOT wont red tag it!

I did this about a year ago. You will have to pay one day fees in the states you cross. You do this at the border crossings. If I remember right, Arizona had the highest fees, around $100. Most other states were less than half that. Make sure you have a bill of sale and the current registration from the state you buy it in.

A trip permit for each state. You can buy them at port of entries, or sometimes at authorized truckstops. Here in Mn it was a five day permit, and cost around $25 ?? some years ago.

In addition to what Bob and Tonka mentioned bringing, I'd also make sure to get a copy of the last paid FHUT. You won't need it to travel, but you will need proof of when it was paid when you go to take care of licensing and the all the other legal stuff in your home state.

Good Luck!!

Here's a site that has info: http://www.irponline.org/InfoExchange/JurisdictionInformation/Trippermit.htm

when we bought a truck from ohio a few years ago , we got a temp. reg for the truck in that state, It was good for 3 or 5 days can't remember. They have an offficial name for it , I think it's called a temp. transit permit. I think. That was all we needed to bring back to VT. We were stopped at 3 dot check points and every thing was ok.

I bought a truck about a year ago, just the tractor, and drove it back here to Maine. I called our state Motor Vehicle Dept, was going to get a "hunters permit" which is a registration that an owner operator uses to drive an unregistered truck around when he is going from one trucking company to another looking for a job. I think it was around $50, can't remember. They told me to go to my local town and get a vehicle transfer plate instead, $13 and I had to have VIN #s and proof of insurance. They put on the regis your route, so I wouldn't take a detoru thru California on my way back home, but the agent just put on the form, "most direct route". Just taped the cardboard plate to the inside of windshield, and away I went. you can only use it for unloaded vehicle, and yes I did the safety inspection before I hit the road and went thru 3 scales no problem. Check with your local state, as all are different, but your home state is the one who has the say as to what you can do. Trip permits for states are only if you are hauling commercially, but they won't tell you that at the border, and will gladly take your money if you don't know any better.

I looked at a ti axle in FL a couple years ago the dealer told me that he regularly sells trucks to the northern boys. They get a temp tag, insurance and all of that and the only state that ever has any trouble in VA, but no one ever got shut down. This is a good thread, I have always wondered about this as I would like to get a nice dump down south and drive it home.

I'm looking at a truck and trailer a few states away from me. If I read this correctly I would not be able to load my vehicle on the truck to get it back home? Does anybody know if there are exceptions to this?

Mention that you are hauling your personal property and not hauling commercial and it should go as others have said.

Thanks Dwan, now all I have to figure out is if the truck and trailer will haul my 315. What do you think, LN8000 single axle and a 25 ton trailer.

OK, lots of info for transporting over state lines. Make sure that there are current inpection sticker on the vehicle. You can put your personal vehicle on a trailer and haul it home (it is your personal property). I had trouble with the NY DMV for getting temp plates, but finally got them. I bought a truck and trailer in NY and just got home tonight from picking it up. The first weigh station (Pennsylvania) did a full inspection gave me a fine for a couple things and turned me loose (2 hours later).

The best advice I got from the inspector was to have currrent inpection stickers on the vehicle(s) that you are purchasing, Outside if that it is just dealing with the weighmasters and getting all your paperwork checked out.

Good luck to anyone else that dares purchase out of state.
