cool pics, is that where you work? were those 797s? what you mining? i dont know how boring that would be digging such big holes one place for so long. but running the really big iron is cool, keep those pics coming please.

Thats our new 824H got it with less than 1 hour on it. Trucks are 789 b's 190 ton payload. The 23 shovel is a P&H 4100, the 20 shovel is a 2300, yeah this is where I work, and yeah it does get kinda boring sometimes but all in all pretty decent.

i work at a small bentonite mine, we have good iron, i get to travel from pit to pit, the deepest we go is 100 foot take the top off with scrapers down to rock then the dozers take over. ive ben here for 3 years now,as bored as i get sometimes i stop and look how cool the scrapers look pushpulling or how big the new d11 is and think i got a pretty cool job. i was just wondring if after you work around those big shovels and trucks if it gets mondane or do you still marvel at the amound of dirt your moving, or does the equipment even seem that big anymore?

Nice new H, you should get us some pics from inside the cab of the number 23 P&H :D just wandering what it would look like to be up that high and loading a truck

does anyone know why the tracks are set up like that on the 23 with one side being different than the other?

It keeps the drive motors and gear reductions up high and out of harm's way.

I'm not sure what you mean exactly, the tracks are the same on both sides.

Not right/left, but rather front/rear.

On one end (the front?) the nose is high, and rear, low.:beatsme

OK, sorry, I was thinking side to side, not end to end...lol.

Like Bobcat Ron said, it keeps the drive motors up and the idlers down for more stability and less abuse and damage.

the monster cable shovel what does it run on? is that big line attached for electricity, i didnt see any smoke stacks.

Eric
01-12-2008, 10:11 PM
It's electric, runs off 7800 volts. I got some video today I'll try to get loaded up. To answer the other question, I mostly run a dozer, blade, or excavator. havn't run a big shovel in a couple of months.

Thanks for posting! I didn't think cable shovels were used much any more. How many yards is the bucket??

Eric
01-13-2008, 12:14 AM
56 yard dipper on that bad boy. I think out of the three mines in the area, only 2 hydraulic shovels. Those 4100 P&H shovels are the main stay. At Morenci, that's the mothership, they are moving over 1,000,000 tons a DAY. That's muckin!!!

since i havnt seen any pictures of mining lately i took my camera to work today, sorry no giant stuff, 2 637e2s and a 9r, we are taking a topsoil pile and putting it along the bottom of a slope in a long pile so the dozer can spread it out in the lower spots that i was too chicken to get with my scraper, where the scraper is on top of the hill it dont look that steep but when i got up there it was a different story, i got out and looked over the edge,

That is one big wheel loader but for how big it is that bucket looks too small for it. Not saying that bucket is small by any means but compared to the machine that bucket looks small.

The bucket does look too small compared to the overall bulk of the loader. But the thing to remember is that the buckets are sized according to the weight of the material they are handling. That's why buckets on loaders handling coal are so much bigger than a normal rock bucket, and ones on loaders handling say iron ore are so much smaller.

The ore they are loading at this mine is heavier than plain old rock, so the bucket has to be sized smaller so the loader can handle it without trying to rip itself apart.

Eric i was just wondering if you have assigned machines? ive noticed you run about everything. if they are assigned how does it work? where i work its union so seniority rules. if i had more seniority i would be posting more pics of our track hoe or d11.

Eric
02-07-2008, 12:04 AM
Our mine is non union. I am on what we call the 'grade crew'. We run anything and everything in the mine. All of us on this crew are fairly expierienced in mining, have gone from production crews to this road crew gig. We run all the new stuff when it's available, :D:D. We get it before anyone else. Got the 994, a new 10T, 345CL, 16M. :D:D If our stuff is down we get whatever is available. We fill in on the shovels when needed also.

I have never worked under union representation so I don't know the pro's or con's. This is all I know, but if you get hired in our mine as an operator you will run everything we got.:drinkup

It looks like a desert wasteland. What are you all digging for out their in the middle of no where?

637slayer
02-08-2008, 11:30 PM
i guess i should take more pictures of the landscape to give it some justice, but you are right it is barron, we dig some of the ugliest dirt i have ever seen. i have come to the conclusion its due to the bentonite that we are mining, bentonite is volcanic ash that settled to the bottom of prehistoric oceans, its so toxic to the soil that nothing will grow.through our reclamation process we actually improve the landscape, we are at the base of a beautiful mtn. range called the big horns highest peak is over 13,000 ft. during really bad weather its not unusual to see the elk herds come off the mountain down to where we mine, usually the day before a really bad storm they dont hang around long, when their gone you know the weather is gonna get warmer.

There is something about it though. If I didn't live here I'd be living there.:usa

the pictures that i post is just our mining area, the mine i work at has been operating since the 60s, back then there were no laws for reclaiming. the ugly dirt on the sides of some of the hills is actually something we call ash, the top 3 to 7 foot on top of the bentonite that is worthless, back in the good ole days "pre law" they would just doze it all over the edge and leave it, forever staining the landscape in these areas, sometime in the late seventies with the epa, msha they set the guidelines for reclaiming what we mine, now we separate all soils the ash and other junk dirt go back in on the bottom topped off with the better topsoil. the pics that i post here are not of how wyo really looks, the overburden on top of the bentonite seems, is totally different from the rest of wyomings dirt.

By your posts I kind of have the idea your up around Buffalo or Sheridan. I've been around Greybull a few times but not that far east. Most of my time was spent in the southern half. Your pics look pretty typical for Wyoming to me. High mountain desert, but still beautiful in its own way.

Think its called big muskie and is a dragline.

Changing the hub on it seems to be about one long day of work:umno

didnt it burn to the ground or something?

great pics guys!!

BIGBEN2004
02-10-2008, 11:23 AM
I can't remember what one caught on fire but it wasn't the big muskie. They scraped it since large shovels are not as eficiant as more smaller one working is. One big shovel cost too much to build, move, and fix not to mention if it breaks for a day then no progress is being made.

bobcat ron
02-10-2008, 11:28 AM
I read that one had tipped over and it was cheaper just to scrap it there, other stories are about the old "Silver Spade" tipping over while being transported over soft ground with 4 feet of wooden mats, also scrapped.

alco
02-10-2008, 11:40 PM
Just so you guys know, it was a stripping shovel that burned, though not to the ground. The shovel was the Marion 6360 named "The Captain". It was scrapped due to the fact that rebuilding it was going to cost too much. Not because they are not efficient. In some applications they can be the most efficient machine.

Also, there have been several shovels tip over, but the Silver Spade was not one of them. The Silver Spade ran right up until it was being walked off to become a museum piece. However, it suffered a catastrophic failure in the swing bearing area, and was deemed as too expensive to fix so the machine could be moved. As a result, it would have had to become a showpiece right where it was, but the money wasn't available to buy and reclaim the land around it. So the machine was scrapped.

I like the rippers on the 980!
One of the best loaders I've ever operated was while working for Riverside Construction.
It was a Cat 936 with a 4 in 1 and rippers in the back.
That was best balanced "do anything" machine I've been on.
Plenty of power, small enough for tight areas yet able to snatch up a 16,000 lb concrete dead-man and carry it off without any rigging.

637slayer

its the only newer 980 ive ever run, a couple of times our scraper dozer was down so i got the 980 to rip up some hard dirt, get some dirt in the bucket for weight and ripped everything i wanted to rip, i was impressed. i can see how lifting heavy loads with the ripper back there for balance would be pretty handy. you must have good eyes or alot of experience, seems like that was a long way away to tell it was a 980. i was gonna get a closer pic but all the trucks were coming in to get loaded and its one lane traffic for about a mile so i had to hurry out of there bak to my own area, to avoid getting into trouble.
