Do you need a MC number to operate multi state with a GVW under 26,000?

I am moving a boat for a buddy from MN to FL.

Since it is a boat and a normal boat trailer, the Dirty South Trucking magnets come off the truck and I should “fly under the radar.”

If you're doing it "for hire", you're supposed to have authority, but in this case like you said, the Dirty South Trucking signs should be behind the seat, and the boat should become "yours" till it gits to Flaawida! It'd be a whooooooole lot less aggrevation just owning that boat on paper for a couple days, neighbor.:thumbsup

Dam it man.

The only thing that may hurt me is the boat being 11' wide I have to pull permits and put the signs and lights up and stop at all the scales.

But it is my buddy and I will be using the boat too.....

I am not worried about it.

Just nice to be white and not gray.

That ain't no big deal Sean. Permit it, flag & sign it, and go down the road like you own it. I'd just have a Bill of Sale or something stating the "ownership" so you're not questioned on the for hire transportation issue, that's all. Straight forward and simple.

If this is a one time type of deal, and this guy is really a "buddy", I'd try and sneak through without Authority.

I don't like to recommend people skirt the law when it comes to trucking, but getting your authority can be an expensive PITA, and for such a small job it seems way overkill. If you're going to do this stuff more and more, I'd definately get your Authority and fly right for you and your business's protection.

Anything at or above 10,001lbs needs the number. Good luck on your trip.
