Hey guy, I'll be turning 18 in about a week and a half and that means I am eligible to get my CDL here in NJ. Was wondering if any other NJ guys were on here and had some advice about taking the test. Thanks.

I think the test is pretty much standardized. Just get the handbook and study study study!!! The questions are drawn directly from the text.
For the practical test, just make sure you follow procedures to the T. After you get your license you'll find better ways to do some of the things but for test purposes you MUST follow their procedures.

There are several standardized tests which make up the CDL test.
The state of New Mexico has incorporated these tests into their commercial driver handbook as study guides.
If you call the DMV in Albuquerque and tell them you are thinking about moving to NM and getting a CDL, they can mail you their manual with the tests included. It is an effective study guide.
There is a company called Foley Company in Glastonberry, CT that specializes in analysis of your trucking and DOT liability and can develop a truck program to protect you in case of audit. Theres another one that specializes in forms but I can't remember the name, amnesia actin up, y'know.

It really is'nt that hard to get your cdl, however, don't be discouraged if you don't pass all 3 tests on your first go round. Also, pay particular attention when doing the inspection test, the part I failed my first time. You must touch and explain virtually every part and system on the vehicle, even down to making sure the windshield washer works. The good part is that you only have to re-take the portions that you fail. In talking with the DMV tester, I found out that In Ohio only about 5% pass the complete test that had not had formal schooling, and only about 30% of those that completed a CDL course passed the first time. I have no trouble believing this, because when I was there virtually everyone failed some portion of the test. Also, as mentioned, makesure that the the vehicle that you take is up to par, or you can't test. Good luck!
