Incredible!!!
That is an amazing machine. , with five operators the first thing they must teach in the "how to operate this beast" class is COMMUNICATION!
Has anyone found any shots of it actually working? (not just chewing on CAT's)
Does it screen and separate the diggings too?

Nice pictures.
That D8 is small.
But i bet you got the price wrong...100 000 dollars is not enough for that little thing.
And don't stop now, u know we boys love toys!:)

I have seen the wheel on TV but not the dozer. Is that what happens if you doze a little to close to the wheel? DP

IIRC that D8 was park close to the high wall during a shift change or something.

The output of this thing is actually 240 000 cubic meters a day, if it would work 24h non stop at maximum speed.
This afcourse never happens.
I have some pics of machine number 282 working taken last year on a trip with the dutch Bouwmachineforum.

Hi,, MuscleGirl.
Thanks for those photos. I had seen the TV news item of the rig crossing the highway and some of the photos of the scooped-up D8R but none of the removal of the D8R from the machine.
Great stuff. Thanks again.

so if the d8 wasnt operator error, you'd think that with 5 operators running the bucket wheel would have seen the dozer sitting there:confused:  . or maybe thats just me thinking again:beatsme

As it was told to me, the dozer operator had stepped off the machine to relieve himself when the wheel swung towards it. So that would make it operator error on the part of the dozer operator.
The wheel was being run from the cab on the blind side of the wheel at the time. These machines have two cabs, one on either side. So when swinging one way, they have to rely on cameras to see what is over there. If the dozer was parked and the operator never saw it in the camera, he would nevr have known he had caught it.
One thing to remember as well. The 5 operators are not all looking at the bucket wheel, they work on different parts of the whole system. Our bucketwheels ran with a 3 person crew. The operator in the cab, the operator who ran the discharge onto the conveyor belt, and the third was the cat operator to do cleanup around the machine.

Yea that thing was considered the biggest TRACKED machine built by humans. The giant bucket wheel excavator "Bagger 288" was built by Krupp in Germany in 1978. Anyone spot any videos of this great machine in action?

Hey musclegirl. Where did you find these pictures of de D8R towed back to the ground? I'm documenting this case for school and would like to collect as much pictures as possible about this incident. If anybody else has more pictures about this, please feel free to send them to me or mention the URL's.

Yeah it had to mess some other stuff up with regards to structural integrity I would think? I wonder if they would do stress/crack test to visually view areas of concern with dye on sound? I'm sure that machine would have been written off, but a lot of money wasted on such an expensive machine.
