Hello everybody my name is Brent Archibald me and a close personal friend of mine want to start a construction company. Obviously i know costs and are going to be high, but i do know a little about starting a business i am currently co-owner of B&A Lawn Care LLP. It is a small grass cutting and landscaping company based in cincinnati ohio. I am looking into ways of branching into the construction field but i am not sure how to do this. Any tips woudl be much appreciated.

Any experience with equipment?

First I'd go solo, there are so many ways it can go wrong it a partnership.

Mow your lawns part time and go to work for another contractor running equipment. You'll learn more in a week working for someone else than you would in a month on your own. I teamed up with a buddy on a large project last summer, we were running 2 hoes, a backhoe, and a dozer on 1 site and I learned tons from him, wouldn't have traded that job for 3 more just like it working by myself.

How should i go about looking for an operating job when i have never used a peice of equipment. I do know of someone who needs somebody to run a skid steer to load mulch all day, should i just call around?

I have another question (i am sorry, thanks for taking the time everybody) heard a lot about site completion, what does that all entail?

I am in the same boat as backhoe but I have worked for a company for around a year and a half. I am a land surveyor by trade but got into site work for money reasons. My partner has been around this type of work for probably 13-14 years so I guess we have a pretty good bit of knowledge. He knows all the equipment side and I am the number cruncher so to say, but I would like any advise. I plan on taking my GC test soon but we are going to start with some smaller stuff like some electrical layouts and other small utility jobs. thanks michael
