Can anyone that is a little more familar with the 939's clue me in on what the controls are that I have marked in the picture below on this cab machine? Right side as you are sitting in the machine marked with YELLOW arrow behind the bucket control lever. Is that control lever for a 4in1 bucket jaws? RED arrow on left side, right behind the travel joystick. Is the lever the control for a rear ripper? Or do I have it completly backwards or wrong all together? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Dirt

The lever you have marked with a red arrow locks the joystick in forward or reverse so you can free your left hand of the joystick.

So, is the travel joystick on the 939 the same as the hystat dozers or like the track skid steers?

Yes and the other one is looks like for the rippers if it was to the 4n1 it should to directly to the right of the bucket control where that black filler panel is.

Thanks guys, now I see what is what. I've had a couple of Cat track loaders, but neither was equiped with a 4 in 1 or ripper. So,the machine in the picture would have a 3rd valve and control lever for a rear ripper.

Thanks,

I have a 939 and a D5G both with Hystat and the joysticks are totally different. The 939C uses a proportional control - i.e. the further you move it, the faster it goes, with a 2 speed switch in the joystick. On the other hand the D5G has an indent and jumps right in gear as you move it forward or aft. On the D5 - you make it go faster with the variable speed rocker switch in the joystick.

ante_up is correct about the lever marked with red arrow locks the drive joystick. I would only add that it would be more accurate to say it provides firction for the drive lever control. When your doing fast cycling with the loader, hitting a pile, loading the truck, hit the pile again, you'll use the drive lever in free mode with no friction for fast operation. When your doing grade work like a dozer, the free lever mode makes operating jerky when you hit bumps causing movement of your hand on drive lever. By adding friction to the drive lever, it allows you to stroke the lever forward to the desired speed, and relax your left hand and it holds that speed while grading. You'll get used to this feature and find it quite handy.
