Proper Licensing for Excavation Contractor

I am curious as to what kind of licensing is typically required for earthwork contractors involved in typical sitework operations, ie. excavating, land clearing, utilities, septic systems, etc.?

I'm sorry, I should have been more specific.

I live in Massachusetts but I would work anywhere from north of Boston (North Shore) to Rhode Island/ Fall River area. This would also include Cape Cod and the Islands.
