How come I can't start a new thread in the first 12 catagories??

On the main page?

In an effort to prevent spammers from posting the way they do (they have bots that'll register at thousands of boards in a day, and then they'll return and post a thread hocking Viagra or nude vidoes, or God knows what else), the site software has been adjusted so that new members are listed as "probationary members", and after having posted 5 posts, then they are able to start threads of their own.

So far, it has seemed to be a hit or miss thing as to whether it's functioning or not. Actually, this question is the first indication I've seen that it is.

For the moment, I'd recommend finding a couple more topics that interest you, and posting something there, and once your post count reaches 5, starting threads should be no problem.

On edit: Also, we apologize for the inconvenience..

cat d9
01-18-2007, 11:59 PM
I knew there would be a logical explaination, just couldn't find it in the rules.

digger242j
01-19-2007, 12:03 AM
Yeah. Once we get an ideal solution figured out, I'm sure there'll be something posted, whether it's in the rules, or an announcement, or whatever. The whole spam thing represents quite an administrative problem for all the BB sites, and it seems to keep getting worse... :Banghead

cat d9
01-19-2007, 12:14 AM
Yes I know what you mean. I have 5 posts andd it still shows the first 12 on the main page as locked:crying :crying

digger242j
01-19-2007, 12:24 AM
Well, now you have 6... :)

Also, if you only used the "back" button on your browser the page may have loaded form the memory cache that's right in your computer. It may have changed, but since you're looking at the page as it loaded the first time, you would see the same thing. Try "reloading" the page and see it it's any different.

Tegian
04-13-2007, 04:05 PM
Tegian, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

1. Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
2. If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

That is the message you get if you try and post with below five posts. If you are able to edit that message it would be nice if you are notifed that you need 5 posts.

If nothing else this thread helped me get closer to 5 posts atleast

digger242j
04-13-2007, 05:15 PM
That's a good idea, but I'm not sure whether it can be done or not. That seems very much the same as messages that you get on all VBulletin type bulletin boards. I suspect that it's part of the software, and cannot be edited locally. (It's not within my power to change, or else I'd at least give it a try.)

Yes the spammers joining the sites to promote viagra or such can be a huge pain for admins. I have a small BB on one of my sites and can get between 30 and 100 new registrations a day....it takes a great deal of time and effort to keep up with this stuff. My hat goes off to the admins of sites like this for all the time it take to keep this running for our entertainment.

I think this was mentioned in another post but you should never post your email address in a post. If you have to post your email add a couple characters in it with a note following explaining to remove the characters. There is programs called spiders that cruise the web looking for you email address in postings and add it mass email lists.

this #3 for me ....lol

digger242j
10-27-2007, 02:42 PM
The post requirement was indeed changed to 3. It's been suggested that you may have to log out, so your cookies are cleared, and then log back in, before the software will allow you to post threads.

I probably should point out, that unless you actually "log out" using the button at the far right at the top menu bar, the software will keep you "logged in" for about an hour after your last activity. (Check "who's online sometimes, and you'll see that member so and so is reading a thread that's only three posts long, but the time is an hour old. Nobody reads that slowly.)

You need to allow a bit of time for the cogs to turn in the server, try logging out using the log out function at top right, remove the cookie then log back in again.

in have a 1999 bobcat skidsteer (773 I think... i'll have to check again) and it works fine for a 1-2 mins but then it warms up and loses all power. I check the hydro fluid and it's fine. i don't know too much about these machines and i don't want to take to to a shop until i check the easy things first .... any ideas.... ohh and once it loses power if i hold the leavers foward the power comes back off and on??...is there a filter in there to check or is it the pump?

Steve Frazier
01-30-2009, 12:39 AM
A sticky thread is one that we feel is important enough to have at the top of the chart so everyone notices it. It's "stuck" in that position and doesn't scroll to the bottom as it ages like normal threads.

Tony, you need to have 3 posts (it used to be five), before you're allowed to start a new thread yourself. It a measure to discouraged spammers from joining and posting irrelevent junk. This way, at least they have to go to a little trouble to start a thread. We realize it's an inconvenience for new, real members, and for that we apologize.

It says the post above is your one and only post, so post two more somewhere (even in the "test" forum will do, but not in TGIF, cause those don't count toward your total), and you should be able to start a thread of your own.
