well i have decided to put the new seals in the steering clutch area and fix up the tracks and front idler. so i removed the 2 pads where the master link is and went driving until they were even. drove THE HOOD in to the shop and popped the master pin. of course my little shop is too short, oh well, LOL.
we are even going to replace the wooden top roll. the old one will heat the shop a couple of hours, LOL
on the steering clutches, how many inches of discs and plates do i need. we went thru this last year but i forgot. the joys of getting old, LOL
also this cat was under water for 3 years.

If you look at the top picture he has a wooden guide there instead of rollers.

thansk, lowboy we run wooden top rollers on the winter freighting cats, that is what makes them so much different then a southern cat.
also we put anything in the wood stove that will fit thru the door. we must stay warm in the great white north, LOL

King of Obsolet, I was told that running a dozer in snow actually will wear out the tracks faster than running it in dirt. Something about snow doesn't lubricate the tracks as well. I wondered if that was true. Have you noticed any differences yourself with your equipment?

jeff d, snow is easier on your equipmet if you have the holes in the pads. in snow you run the tracks loose and the snow lubrates lots. an undercarriage that is woren out in dirt standards will give you lots of life in snow.
hope that helps. my cats don't turn a track in the summer. work is there but the cost of making a winter freighting cat work 3 month in hot, where does not out weight the cost of conversion. most old timer freighters had one cat out of 8 that would work in the summer. the other cats waited till the first snow fly to work,. the are special cats for freighting.

A recent article in one of our civil contracting mags showed how a company in New Zealand used to just jam a pinus radiata (better known as pinus crapus here) in for a top roller on their tracked equipment.
It's a little bit off on a tangent, but I've heard that cats that work in coal all the time get really long undercarriage life as well. It has to do with the fact that the coal dust acts a lot like graphite lube.
Yes digger I would agree that dozers achieve good undercarriage life working in coal, its low impact, low abrasion and you are probably right about coal having lubricating properties. Its important though to have relief holes in the centre of the track shoes to reduce packing and you have to watch track tension... same with snow, I've known small dozers and excavators become so packed with snow between the sprocket and bushing that the machine quits driving. Shoe relief holes will help but some manufacturers have snow sprockets with relieved profiles.

yes the snow will pack in there and stop the tracks dead or break something. wet snow is the worst, and when you are on the ice and come across water between the ice and snow, then the tracks start snapping trying to get rid of the snow through the holes in the pads.

King, What's the plan for the Hood this round? Obviously you've got it running, and are putting wood back on top so you're planning on using it for freighting? Are you getting more calls for freighting then?

thansk, THE HOOD might get some freighting in this winter but it is hard to say. we still have way too much open water up here. nothing is freezing.
all my cats have windshield and they are handy for pulling the steering clutches. only in the KINGDOM, LOL

Well at least there's snow for you, so much mud here right now that I have soft spots showing up like would happen during the spring thaw......would be the summer cats going here for sure. The lakes are completely open, I've never seen that before here. (Guys are actually using boats to go fishing rather than the ice huts normally in use.)
From your comment, sounds like you have freighting trips to do if weather co-operates? Are these supply trips to lodges, or mining stuff? Any of the diamond stuff coming through your neighbourhood?

Not that I'm ingenious by any stretch of the imagination, but that's something I would do as well. Not for any other reason here other than economics, or the lack thereof...I was just yanking King's chain (no pun intended,) about the burning of the rolls.:wink2 I fully understand how valuable energy sources even here in the Green Mtns. are. We have burnt things that we shouldn't discuss to keep warm.:nono That's why we build our stoves out of old oil tanks and stuff, just in case someone throws something in there that doesn't belong...like empty ether cans.LOL

thansk guys, she turned cold up here in the great white north, woke up to -32C but feels like -44C. WOW EH!!!!! so it is burn anything in the wood stove to stay warm and work on the THE HOOD. pallets, shingles and used oil sure makes a nice heat, the dogs love lying around the wood stove, LOL.
i had help from old magnet on the ACMOC BB and we got the steering clutches figured out. i took apart about 8 hubs to find enough good discs that can be used. if i ordered from general gear, it would be $3000.00 cdn money for all the parts i need. that is more then what the cat is worth, LOL so today i reassembled 2 steering clutch hubs with the best of the best parts. note i whipped up a high tech press thingy.

thansk, the way it is going you will need a permit to FART. the rules and regs are costing us big time money and who is paying. government contracts are nickeled and dimed to death, plus all the forms needed. it is getting bad.
that is why i like the great white north, if i don't want to see anyone or be bothered by anyone i jsut don't leave the KINGDOM. lots of good people on the internet.

:wink2 the KING got luckly today, big time, LOL. i was changing the seals on where the shaft goes through the crown gear and found a toasted bearing. of cousre it is the hard one that you can't see behind the crown gear. so i worked my magic with the torch and it popped off with a couple of taps.(remember i can only see about 1/4 of an inch of this bearing) i was so lucky that the torch never even came close to the shaft. then i used my GREAT WHITE NORTH power pack and pressed on a new old stock bearing on.
it was a good day in the KINGDOM and only -35C.

I don't want to be the one to throw cold water on something that's posted in the spirit of good fun, but I'm sure that last picture is not the sort of content we're trying to become known for here at HEF. It may not technically be in violation of the forum rules, but it's certainly a judgement call as to whether it's "suitable" content or not.

hello guys, remember the cat i'm working on, changing the steering clutches. the bearing today was a big surprise and i got very very lucky torching it out. it could have been a 2 day job removing the crown gear shaft and pressing the old bearing off. or if the torch nicked the shaft, then i would have been up the creek without a paddle (all creeks are frozen in the great white north right now, LOL)
it was a stressfull time with the torch and very pleased i was able to change the bearing. sure would have hated to do all this work and then rib it apart to do the bearing.

ok, spent the morning trying to get the steering clutch back in the hole. sure are easy when they are woren out because they are thinner. i don't now why caterpillar couldn't give us an extra 1/4 more room. LOL

woke up to -45C so it was in the shop to install the steering clutches in the hole. but it was a lot of fun trying to get the steering clutch that are thick with good discs. i even had to pop the fender out to get it to fit. but i did it. why couldn't caterpillar give 1/4 inch more room.
then i lowered the second one in the hole and got a couple of bolts started. that is it for today and it is beverage time, LOL.
note how i chained the steering clutch hub to the fender to get the big nut tight with a 3 foot pipe on the 3/4 power bar.

Good to see you got those tracks rolled up to get the doors closed. A little heat is a good thing. A few years ago we leased half our shop out to a logging outfit. Their mechanic would open the door, pull his service truck in, then pull what ever he was working on in about halfway and tear it down. :mad: Then he'd get mad cuz I shut off the heater. Were just not a big enough outfit to heat the whole outdoors.

thansk, the shop is not the greatest but it does work. i have to keep it warm in there all the time because the water for the house is in the shop plus we have 3 dogs that can't freeze either.
i have seen guys at the mine do that all the time, door open and working on stuff 1/2 inside. only the mine could afford to heat like that.

i see you guys are getting the cold after the storm, we are to warm up next week, so by then THE HOOD should be finished.

do you think they put the wrong sprockets on THE HOOD. there is about 1/2 out to the inside according to the bottom rollers. at least both sides are the same, LOL
also, here is how i blocked it so i could get the drain pails under and use the blocks as steps.

Are parts easy to find for these old dozers? I realize that you can use parts off of other dozers for somethings but things like seals and such seem like they should be new.

yes parts are easy to get for a 50 years old machine. the d6 9u was one of the most popular machine for winter frieghting. plus with the computer and BB parts and cross over numbers make it a lot easier.

My gandpa used to have a few of those old cats he used around the farm in Hayden Colorado. He had a couple old D4's and a couple old D2's. He died a few years ago and I've wondered what happened to them.

lashlander, maybe check in to them, the d2 is the most popular cat to be restored because they fit in a small shop and one can lift most of the pieces. plus they don't require the really big wrenches and they can be transported by a car trailer.
the d4 is popular for doing work and easy to work on. the d6 and up is for the guys that have land and equipment to move them around. also you need a bigger shop and tools.
the d9 cats are moved once and that is it, the freight kills a guys. check out this d9 my buddy has, it is a fun cat but you can't afford to move it.

Thats a good read. Those old 9's were big. A D9D was the first piece of construction equipment I ever operated. Pony motor, cable dozer, I was pushing trees into a canyon and burying them in Sun Valley Idaho. I was 18 years old and man was I cool! :yup I couldn't figure out why they couldn't make a cable that would last more than a few days though. I figured out after a while it may have been operator related.:) :)

ok, boys, been doing something thinking and looking at the pictures in the service manuals(not the same as playboy magazine). some one who didn't have a book or access to the internet put these shims in. remove the shims and everything should centre its self or be very close.

well is was a good day in the KINGDOM with a little welding happening. i welded up the saddle and got it all straight. plus it was warm enough for the loader out and bring up a few spare parts, LOL

As you know, a 9U D6 doesn't weigh much and with 36" pads it could "walk on water".

well another day on the D6 9U known as THE HOOD. i got the mess all cleaned up and welded properly from the torching the fellow did. but today it was get rid of the bird sh*t welds that were holding the front idler guide tightener thingy inplace plus the front spring placment. so a little air arcing and BYE BYE booger welds and will be putting in the thick plate to cover the mess and give strength. the thickness will raise the front of the cat up some since it has sagged from 50 years of wear and tear. (humans sagg too after 50 years that is why the invented belts and bras, LOL)
one thing that makes these cats winter freighting cats is the leaning front idlers, you only see this in winter frieghting cats because they travel for miles with the blade up and speed is involved. so after 50 year they look knocked kneed. so the quickest and easiest thing to do is cut the track frame and get everything straight and reweld. this spot is the easiest to torch and weld. don't worry about the length, i need the pratice on welding, LOL i never would have thought there would be water in the track frame, but after 3 years under water, water gets into every where.
on friday we weld and weld and weld, that heats up the shop very nicely at -24C.

today we welded with the 3/16 MANLY rod using the ranger 250. i welded the plate on and then did free hand on the front idler build up. it looks pretty good for not laying out a pattern, LOL

thansk guys, i was able to get back on THE HOOD today after being the social butterfly for the last week. we had some people up from the land down under and spent the whole time looking at the computer sceen for days on end. after about 4 days i know whuy i don't work in an office with ladies with low cut blouses and skirts.
so today i was in the shop getting dirty and loving every minute of it, it must be the stero cranked up to the 80s rock and roll, LOL. i went to tighten up the little tinny guards on the sprocket area and i noticed things were note right. so i popped the saddle thing off and then things got really loose. so now i know why the sprocket is woren like it is. everything was moving. so now we have to fix it up and get it back to being as good as it will get for a 50 old machine. LOL
diddug, if things don't pick up in the great white north, i'll be moving south. worse year we have had in 10 years. last invoice i wrote for welding,loader work was in october. good thing i don't have monthly payments on my equipment.
deas, southern belle is doing better just can'y get her cold. so lots of cuddling on the couch, LOL

well after a day of thought, it was decide that we will make a sprocket out of the new rd6 one. by the time i wait and get one from 1000 kms to the south. i can have this cat back together.
i needed a spocket puller so i whipped one up and i decided to weld the arms on because i knew that they would be under pressure. pumped up the jack and just a tap on the back of the spocket and pop it went. WOW EH!!!!!
so i have the right pitch but one tooth short because of the different diameters in sprockets.
only in the great white north EH!!!!!
lashlander, it is just really realy slow, have not figured it out yet, LOL
digdug, the sales of the book and underwear keep the house bills paid. but i need major cash for the big projects that i would like to do. will keep you in mind i i have to head south to make money.

ok worked the magic with the torch and welder. problem i had was the old sprocket was of poor casting because there is a layer of something and the torch won't cut it. so i removed the chrome welds and did a test fit. look good, even the tooth fits good.

well i worked my magic and made a RD6 sprocket fit the D6 9U which was not bad since it was one tooth short. so today it was assembly time and whipp up a handmade a spanner wrench.
(would like to buy a cat adjustable one someday) so at 4:30 today i needed a bearing race and the nearest one is 1200 kms away, go figure because it is friday (i thought i had a spare race and when i went to install it didn't like it, i have come this far, so what is another couple of days???) so i phone my brother in-law and he is sending me one on the bus tonight. family comes in handy once in a while, LOL
we weld and weld tommorrow. got to get this cat finished because i need to angle plow the snow in the yard.

I'm with JDOFMEMI regarding being impressed with your ability to make the best of what you have at hand. Especially considering the environment you have to do this work in(temps, etc.):yup
I'd like to think I'm the same way, but I'm not brave enough to try the massive motifications you attempt (building your own sprocket), nor would I hold very long working in that type of cold.:spaz

I found you a little blast from the past KoO. Now I don't see any snow in the pic but maybe you can decide whether its authentic or not. Looks kinda homemade to me. The inscription underneath says the following:

Yes, AC DID make a jigger very much like that for the U.S. armed forces during WW2. That one doesn't look to be in real bad shape.

thansk, in the month i have been doing little things to the cat and didn't take pictures. the ice is good for freighting but no customers. thelodges are hurting big time. oh well
we have some people that want to come out on the cat train tours but southern belles health is acting up again.
next year will be better.

well it was a good day in the KINGDOM, got the tracks tightened up and the master pin welded. i used the threaded rod to pull it together and used a track pad to make sure the bolt holes line up.
i did up hand weld to seal the master pin. this will do for miles of winter freighting.

did the test run today because i needed the shop to thaw out the water truck. i don't put the seat o until everything has been adjusted, so the small fuel tank and the 5 gallon pail are only temporary, LOL
things went well till i ran out of fuel plowing my nieghbour's yard, never thought at full throotle and pushing a full blade and blowing black smoke would eat up the little fuel tank. so i just towed THE HOOD backwards with the steering clutches tied off back to the KINGDOM. no sense playing with a bunch of fuel when i'm going to put the fuel tank back on. so tomorrow i'll finish the project. the water truck is more important, LOL

biggixxerjim, What you don't like keeping things in storage? This old Cat was in storage at Aqua Storage and Hydrating co. :D
:drinkup King, you done good and I like the temp tank idea I do that sometimes myself. It's a heck of a lot easier than mounting the tank &seat just to pull'em back off and readjust everything again. :cool2

yes the little fuel tank works good, it has a return line too for when on the IH td-6 and td-9s.
i like taking the cat out and working it and adusting the steering clutches and brakes when warm. when you assemble in the shop they don't feel right until you work them. once adjusted and then the seat goes on.

ok, now try and push a cold cat backwards in the little shop with the blade angled. it fits but not straight. couple of hours and will be back in business plowing deep snow.

the fuel is #1 but the gas station here has gotten some cheap stuff and it cost a lot of time and money to get it out of the system.
takes a while to warm up, so leave it over night and then work on it in the morning, i hatewhen things drip on me, LOL
