Hi Guys,
I found your site from Snowplow/contractors site. I love heavy equipment and I love building models of heavy equipment. Last summer I got to operate a Cat 992 loader, a Cat 994D loader, and a Cat 789C mining truck. I have pictures of them on my website. Also I build all steel models of them. I want to build a Cat 5230 shovel, a 797 mining truck and a Cat 24H grader all in 1/12th scale. I post a new picture everyday on my webpage if you get time be sure to visit my site sometime. It's

Don would you ever build a crane? Or would that be to much of a pain to fabricate all the steel webing for the mast?

Don,
Your models are quite impressive, I would image it could be a very lucrative business if you wanted it to be. About how much time is put into one, say like your dozer? Just the enjoin looks like quite a work of art.

I would love to build a detailed crane in 1/12th scale or larger. The webbing on the boom would be a challenge , but would look pretty cool. I love old and new heavy equipment and all brands. I also love making detailed models of them. I have a list a mile long of machines I want to build.

I get $10.00 per hour to hand build a all steel, welded and bolted one of a kind model. Then the materials are figured in . It's a lot of work for $10.00 per hour , but it is a labor of love as a hobby. I hand build every part myself so it is a slow process. I enjoy sharing my projects on my websote and encouraging others to give it a try. My first 1o models were built with just basic hand tools and a bench vise.

Who's Don Campbell? Never heard of the guy.... ha ha:drinkup That is an awesome website, I have been visiting it for years now.

Don; I was in Gaylord about 2 weeks ago just before christmas. I was on my way back to Ontario and stopped for gas. Girlfriend took a burn into your Wal Mart. She was quite impressed as she is a W-M aficiaonado.

Hi Don. My name is Joe and I've admired your work for years now, Great work. I've always like to fabricate and you inspired me to build my own model, so I started building a D9R with a winch and full U about two years ago and loving every minute of it. Just joined this board today and it's right up my ally.

Hi Joe,
I've been absent from this cool sight way too long, it seems great to be back !! I love all the posts here , I just got to figure out how to get around it a little better, ha,ha.
Thanks for the very kind words. Glad I have inspired you to build models. It is a great hobby and has a great connection for all of our love for the real machines.

If you get the chance Don, check over around Alpena for some old and pretty good size iron. The stuff used to be plentiful there when the cement mines were working good. Also you might look down around Bay City if you get over that way. Check out the old mining areas around a place called Alabaster. If you go just south and west a bit of the Bay City Auto Auction, you will find a neat old shovel sitting in someones yard. it's on the east side of the road. There is a place right on I-75 north of Bay City a ways that buys and sells used iron. He used to have a pretty good batch of stuff. Is on the east side of the freeway on a hillside right next to the ROW fence. Don't know if he is still there or not.

Thanks for the tips.

Hi Joe,
Building models is such a fun hobby , I always encourage others to give it a try. I always tell people to start out with plastic and glue and work up to metal models later once they get the hang of it . Or just enjoy always building out of plastic. Either one is a great way to spend our spare time. I've built 14 dozers now and they are fun to build.

Hey Don, are you saying that I should work with plastic instead of metal? I know I'm not the best fabricator but I thing I do alright. I've been offered $15,500 on my 9. One thing about it is, it would be easier to clean up for paint. LOL.

Even if you have any imagination most people really can make toys themselves. Plastic is a excellent material to use and easy to shape and drill . I'm always happy to help others .
