View Full Version : 2166 clean grain clutch slippage

I have recently learned that the clean grain system on my combine seems undersized, and it is common to this model. Heavy wet high yielding corn will overload the incline auger if you use a bin extension.

I am looking for good ideas to fix this problem . Someone must have a good fix installed?

The problem is that if you adjust the clutch too much you may end up cooking belts or breaking the elevator chain. What is the elevator chain like, worn paddles on the chain will cause more load because grain is slipping past them and crating more friction.
Is it a spring loaded clutch?

All the parts are in as new condition, I installed a new drivetrain beyond the slipclutch last week.

The thing is, talking to other owners, they all have the same problem.

The slipclutch is a spring loaded cogged clutch. Adding a washer under the 3 springs to increase preload is all you can do. The next step would be to weld the clutch solid, and we won't do that. We need a way to remove some load from that drive clutch.

The more i think about it, the more i think simply disconnecting the drive shaft from the inclined auger and adding a hyd motor to drive the auger would solve the problem.

just for safe measure and to get back in the field i would replace the spring and both sides of the clutch.

There's alot of 66 and 88 machines around here with bin ext and havent heard of any problem's dont know if they have a hyd auger on them or not though :beatsme

We have a large combine and tractor salvage yard here and i'm freinds with the guy's i'll ask if there is a fix or a known problem.

Before going the hydraulic motor route I would look at other slip clutches, the spring and cog set up is cheap and simple. We had this same problem with a Allis-Chalmers N7 and from memory we fitted an after market slip clutch that had more adjustment but the problem was that these clutches don't make the rattling sound and so we had to fit a bit of poly pipe to the end of the shaft and you could see from the cabin mirror if it was turning or not.
If there is some wear on the slip clutch cogs it will not hold as well, tightening the springs is an option but you have to be careful not to overdo it, you have to leave enough travel in the springs for the clutch to be still able to work.
Before fiddling with the spring pressure get yourself a spare drive belt or two in case you burn one out/glaze it over.

Hi Watglen. Sorry I'm a little late to help but don't get on much lately. We have also had this issue with a 2166. Some possible solutions are to replace the springs on the clutch,(check with dealer to see if there is an upgrade or heavier spring)slow down when the incline auger is covered with grain, keep adding washers, have a grain cart available to unload when hopper gets half full. I'm assuming your not having problems until the incline auger gets covered. There are two sprockets available to drive the elevator on the machine. We always are on the slow (smaller) sprocket I'm pretty sure but you could try the higher speed although it could magnify the problem. I have seen some pretty ingenious ways of designing a bubble up auger such as with a hydraulic motor run off the reel drive. A bubble up auger near the inclined auger seems to relieve enough pressure that the slip clutch doesn't go off. Don't grease that clutch too much.
Tough year and many issues with wet corn we haven't faced for a while. Good luck.

Hey Jeff, you have a pretty good handle on this problem. I like the bubble up auger idea for a long term solution. But a more elegant solution may be to simply drive the incline auger hydraulically. The auger has the capacity to push that corn to the top of the big top, but the drive clutch doesn't. I think i'm might give that a try this winter. Gotta figure motor torque and speed. My only concern is hyd system capacity.

Thanks for the input.
