These manlifts seem to be an option for tree trimming.
Lately I've been getting a few calls for tree work and was wondering if anyone here has much exp. with one of these machines. The local equip. rental has a genie s-40 4x4.
The JLG brand is supposed to be a good machine also.I might look at a used one since it's a buyers market.

They would work fine for tree trimming, but, unless you were working on dead flat hard ground, you have to have 4wd with articulating axle. 2wd rigid frame lifts don't like rough terrain. The S-40 is a good size and a well built machine. Bigger machines are even more handy for large trees, but they are heavier machines, soft soil could be a problem. As far as brands, I'm a JLG person. My second choice would be Genie. The price may be attractive if you look at Terex machines, but I'd avoid them. We have a Terex TB42 that needs the speeds adjusted for the controllers and it requires an "Optimizer" gizmo to make adjustments...a little over 800 bucks for the gizmo.

Thanks ATCOEQUIP,
Next weekend I'm renting the genie s-40 4x4 w/diesel engine.I have several large hickory trees close to my house .The chainsaw with rope would be too risky from the ground.Barn loft roof needs some tlc also.
Let me know if you come across any good used 4x4 models in the 40ft size.
I have relatives in Sparta so I pass thru your area occasionally.
Thanks

LoL, Hickory trees can get pretty tall! Might still be a bit above a 40' lift, a 60 footer would be better. That's not to say with a little patience and careful work the job couldn't be done with a 40 footer. I do like the S-40 4x4. The ones I've been around claw good with all four tires. And the articulating axle helps keep all four planted to the ground. Be sure and send some pics of the project. ;)

They can get tall but they are in the 45ft range now.
Worked as an electrical lineman 5 years so that exp. will come in handy with trees, saw, etc.
I'm pretty sure the s-40 could handle the trees, and definetly the barn roof.
Pics will be before,during, after.
Yee haw!

I hope im not too late on this one. depending on what all you want to do with the lift i would consider a bucket truck. I say that because it sounds like you are mostly wanting to do tree triming. A bucket truck moves 10 times faster than a lift and is much easier to get into tight places. I would recommend a hiranger or an altec boom. You can pick up an older one cheap 6-8K. You dont need a trailer or semi to move them.
If you are stuck on a man lift i would stick with a JLG, Genie, or Snorkel. All these machines are excellent. 4x4 is a must and oscillating axles. If you dont mind hauling it go with a 60' machine (much more versatile). If you need the articulating model i would only have a JLG (600a, 600aj, 450a) Above all things stay away from a Terex, Condor, Marklift, Simon. These are all junk!!! And parts are almost impossible for all of them. We have about 15-18 lifts and the JLGs have been the best followed closely by the Snorkels.

If you are looking for a cheap machine. An old Snorkel Uno 41 is a great lift that is inexpensive and simple to work on. They have a rugged 4wd system that does well in rough terrain. As far as S-40 Genie's or JLG's, I managed a fleet of several thousand of them with a major rental company and there are not alot of differences although individuals seem to get better support from JLG. Ironplanet has had some really attractive prices on these units lately. Good luck and let us know what you decide and how it works out.

Hello.
I have used them in the past and can say that from an operators standpoint is that it does not matter who made it.

I was a branch service manager for the largest rental company in the states, and we had a few million dollars in inventory with these at our location. The JLG might have a slightly better support network(emphasis on slightly), but the Genie seemed to hold up better. The techs liked them better for ease of maint. and as a plus the operating pressures were lower than the JLG which meant fewer failed hydraulic components over the life of the machine, plus Genie has an outstanding training program. My personal favorite was the old Z- 45/22 4x4, but these are to old to be a practical purchase for daily use now in myopinion.
