Looks like a 977H. We own a 977L and a 955K and I love to run them. We also have a Case 450 from the 60's that gets quite a bit of use.
The 977L is a thing of beauty.
It's a great machine for doing demolition.
Let's you really climb up on the structure and get the crashing and crunching all around you.
Love the power of that old CAT.
It's a
Mean Lean Wrecking Maching, and I love it.

1st loader i learned how to run was on a 955L That my family ran this machine when bought new back in 77' until bout 88' then it was traded for a 655B John Deere In 88 man i kinda missed the ole 955 on the clearing jobs for a while Working w/ the 215B that ole CAT Was 1 tough ole machine :thumbsup
but 1 thing i liked bout the Deere was the 20" pads compared to the Cats 16" pads in soft ground just didnt like that hydrostat whine in the 655B Deere @ 1st made me think something was wrong salesman told myself ,uncle & granddad that was normal
Later yall

You've got me all excited here! Guys on the job thought I was nuts to actually enjoy the crunching and grinding stuff under the tracks. Whether it's demolishing some flimsy wood buildings or running down brush and weed trees, there's nothing like a good track loader! Only got to run a 977 once, definately unforgetable

Just thought I would add a couple of photos of an older Komatsu D75S loading shovel that was recently working on our site.
I can see that you guys are big Cat fans but you may find these of interest.;)

Also on the same job was this Komatsu D57 which as they often do over here in England had an old guy at the controls...a really good operator !! Im afraid Crawler shovel operators are a dying breed in this country as the excavator is king here these days !!
There are still quite a few users of shovels around the Midlands and one company that I used to work for still swears by them. I will post some shots shortly.

:) Here are a couple of shots of a little old Komatsu D31 loading shovel which is lying just a few miles from where I live, I popped around to see if I could take a few photos and the guy was trying his hardest to sell it to me !!:beatsme

Slightly off topic here but here are some shots of newer Cat shovels at work in England.
Last year I was working up in Cambridge for Northampton based James King Earthmoving, they had a hired in 953C while they were waiting for delivery of a brand new 963C

Nice shots Nick.:thumbsup I remember seeing some D57's around as a kid cutting out basements for homes but they have all vanished. I wonder why Komatsu dropped the track loader line? Cat and Deere (Liebherr) seems to be the only ones serious about making a track loader. It's hard to beat a TL as an all-purpose excavating machine.

Just thought I would post some shots of a Cat 963 loader I spotted working close to our hotel on recent Holidays in Fuerteventura, and a very sorry looking 955L, I used to have a few goes in one of those when I was about 13yrs old going back a bit now!!
My wife doesn't get it when we are on holiday, She lies by the pool and I go off machine spotting:Pointhead ....yes it is an illness I think:Banghead

If it's cheap and you have the room go for it! I have been trying to get my hands on an old CAT loader, but the previous owner took it apart before he died of old age. I have been trying to locate all the parts, or I will just have to make an insultingly low offer about what it's worth in scrap. Yes, everyone uses excavators, but for use around the farm or woods I think the track loader is more suitable. An excavator can dig deeper, do demo but it can't move large amounts of dirt or rock any considerable distance, or do any grading. The younger operators prfer them, but many old guys preferred their track loaders. One of these days I am going to rebuild one for home use.

The pic,s at the very start of this thread (posted by 9420pullpan) I first posted an age ago on another site, the kit belonged to a Co, called G.H.Watkins from Worc, U.K. I have some great pic's of a CAT 983 that I was driving belonging to this Co,

What do you hate about the loader? I have not used a 983b myself, but have used a 955 for lot clearing and demolition. Loader with a clamshell can do just about anything you want.

to us the 983 is to heavy for most places we go it seems to be stuck more that it is working. it has a ton of lifting power but not counter weight so it is useless to lift with. there seems to be only 3 things it does very well, burns a ton of fuel ,makes alot of noise and is a dam good anchor for winching. the other thing i personally dont like is the foot steer thing i just cant get that figured out.

Guess you have a lot of clay or mud there, all I ever worked in was rock and sand. Track loaders do suck up a lot of fuel, but they have more pushing power and can load more. The foot steer is like a dozer so I love it, frees up your hands to control the bucket better. Guess I would be the only guy there who wouldn't hate it.

the 983 shovel was a top bit of kit, we used one to excavate refuse/rubbish pits with great results, we worked non stop day and night loading dump-trucks without any snag's, you need to be smooth with all the controls and not bang the bucket over to tip out the load, I dont recall any bits looking the same as anything off a D8H/K, I have also done a final drive in one and all the innards were nothing like a D8 other than a 4 gear drive, I have never seen a 983B but have been told that they lacked the poke of the previous banger, I have some good pic's of the job-site and will dig them out asap.

Now I wish that I'd taken some pictures of my Cat 933 Traxcavator before shipping it off to its new home. It was a mid-50's model, engine from a D2 complete with a pony engine about the same size as the main, 3 speed mechanical gearbox with Johnson bar. It was terribly slow and clumsy compared to the next generation of machines with hydro transmissions, but it was rugged compared to the IH offerings of the same era.
