I went to look at a used truck this evening. The truck was a 1979 International S1700 single-axle dump, in very good shape. The owner claimed that it was a 26000 GVWR truck, but much to my surprise, when I opened the door to check the VIN plate, there was no weight rating stamped into it. Everything else was there: VIN, date of manufacture, model number, but no GVWR. In fact there was no space on the VIN plate even labeled for GVWR.

This is the first truck I've ever come across where that's the case. Can anybody offer an explanation, and offer any insight on what would happen if I got stopped by the DOT? I guess I could get the VIN and see if an International dealer could decode it for me. Any other ideas?

Thanks...

Joe

Even better than "decodiing"...

Is there a line setting sheet with the truck? You might find it on the sunvisor, and I think I recall having seen one pasted to the back of the cab, behind the seat, but it could also very well be missing. It'll tell you everything that was put into the truck when it was built--engine, axles, gears etc. If it's not in the truck, the dealer can get it for you.

I have a feeling the truck probably has 21,000lb rear and a 8000lb front giving the truck a 29,000lb gvw. I could tell what axles you have from a picture. Dad's 77 1800 International has 21,000 rear and 9000lb front with heavier front springs.

You can spec any single axle for a lighter gvw its not something we do here as we don't need a CDL to run a single axle truck.
