One morning a local highway department crew reaches their job-site and realizes they have forgotten all their shovels. The crew's foreman radios the office and tells his supervisor the situation.

The supervisor radios back and says, "Don't worry, we'll send some shovels...... just lean on each other until they arrive."

When I was a kid there was a guy who lived in the neighborhood who had a...well, it wasn't a "job"...let's just say he was on the County payroll. I remember seeing a County Public Works Dept. truck drop him off at home around 9 a.m. and pick him up around 3:30 p.m., maybe not every day, but a *lot* of days. I think he'd go to work, punch in, come home and sit around all day, and go back to work to punch out. His mom was politically connected, so I guess that's how he was able to get away with that. I doubt you could get away with that these days.

That having been said....

The snowstorms here recently have reminded me once again of the bad rap State and Municipal road crews get every time it snows. Listening to callers on the radio complain about road conditions gets to be annoying. When the roads are bad, those guys are *not* leaning on their shovels--they're out there trying to make the roads better. And where they are is where the roads are the worst, obviously because things don't get any better until after the road crews have been there. Things can get bad in a hurry, and nobody can be everywhere at once. People are too ready to criticize a situation they don't understand, and even worse, they're too stupid to know when to slow down, or just stay home altogether.

We can make a little fun of them for leaning on thier shovels, but we should also give them credit where credit is due...

I live in Madison County Indiana. Maybe one of you can tell me why the county snow plows run up and down the high way in front of my house with the blade drown on the bare road surface? I never have been able to figure that one out. Happens almost every year. I'm glad there out there ready to go but wait till these some accumulation first for crying out loud. LOL:confused:
