I built a winching attachment for my skidloader back in the winter of 2006.I used an old jd backhoe for the subframe with a 20,000 lb garwood winch.I moved the outriggers more to the front and added the booms.I use it for winching and rigging in tight spots where the trucks & dozer wont fit.I thought at the time I had a new idea but found that there are 2 or 3 manufacturers producing winch units for skidloaders.Oh well,I like to build stuff.

Looks good! I could use that for pulling tops and logs for firewood.

25C nice looking job on your attachment.What was you winching on?Looks like you have more winch then machine by the looks of the skid track in the dirt in front of the machine !

Thanks guys.I was at my testing facility In the picture.The winch was tied off to a hickory tree.Our first test indicated that the 1/2 cable will snap before anything else breaks.the picture is the second test with 2 part line.With 2 part line and outrigers dug in ,It will pick up the entire skidloader.I was pleased with the results.The skidloader is acting as power unit and counter wieght.I did build a shield for the exposed drive chian .I still need to make a safty shield for the oporater.I just looked at job yesterday that I will need the winch to get the concrete trucks out after they pour.Its a hillside with alot of obstacles around the site,not much room for the wreckers.Ill get pictures.

I have a 20k Garwood that I want to make a portable puller out of and need some input as to what type and size hy motor to drive it. I was thinking of just a skid mount then just attach the hydrylics from equipment to power it. Any ideas and thoughts will be greatly appreactded! Thanks Steve

The Garwood's are good winches divedigger.Here is a closer pic of the motor & jackshaft drive on the skidloader winch and my 1 ton wrecker,they both use the 20k Garwood.The skidloader uses a "char-lynn" 25 cubic inch motor and the wrecker uses a "Prince"motor,I repaced it two years ago.I got it at www.NorthernTool.com item number1008-2906.The jackshaft ratio is important as well,I run a 10 tooth drive and 20 tooth driven spocket ratio on the wrecker and a 10 & 30 on the skidloader.The wrecker winch will stall before the cable breaks and the skidloader winch will snap the 1/2 inch cable.Big difference between 2 to 1 and 3 to 1 ratio's.Holler any time divedigger.I have set up alot of winch rigs.

Hear are a few more pics of the winch on the skidloader.First two pics is the outriggers & boom in the stowed position and the last is the boom in a position to lift a load.It wont lift very high but at times we need to lift an object maybe a foot or so to get cribbing under it.

It takes about 10 minutes to install the winch as I added brackets to lock the subframe to the loader arms and I use the strut rods from my backhoe attachment to tie the skidloader chassis to the loader.I wanted everything tied together as when the winch gets to pulling hard it will dig the outriggers in then it lifts the skidloader off the ground.

That is some mighty fine looking work!! I was wondering how fast the line speed was loaded and empty? I have a Charlynn motor, just need to find out what cubic inch it is. The winch that I have is ex military but dont even looked to be used much. They had a roller fairlead system that bolted on but sombody took it off before I got ahold of it. I think this one has close to 200ft of 5/8 cable on it just need her up and pullin on case I end up over the edge or a rut a little deep!!Thanks again for thr info!

Thank's divedigger,The skidloader winch is a front mount ex-military winch.My line speed is about 10 feet per minute on the skidloader.I set it up for slow hard pulling.The line speed slows down a little when loaded to maybe 8 feet per minute,after that the job is done or the cable breaks.What type of job will you be using the Garwood winch on divedigger?

I would mainly like to set it up so it could be put on the pintle hitch on the dump like a trailer tounge and just plug in to the trucks hyd. Anyway, as long as it is portable just add a hyd supply and be easy to get where its needed! Thanks

divedigger,I see.So is your winch trailer mounted to be pulled behind the dump truck?Northern tool should have everything you need to plum up the hydraulics off the dump truck system and have quick couplers on the rear of the truck for the winch.will you use "scotch blocks" behind the wheels of the dump truck like a wrecker to help anchor the truck?It sounds like a neet project.

Thanks ATCOEQUIP,that was my idea.I wanted a small version of a holmes 750 on the front of the skidloader for rigging in tight quarters & off road winchouts.There was quite abit of welding involved in the winch project.Luckily I had almost everything in stock to build it.The only steel I bought was the angle iron for the lattice webbing on the booms.If you look close at picture #3 on post #8 you will see that I had to mount the garwood winch upside down due to lack of room on the john deere backhoe frame.So the worm gear is on top.I installed seals on the mainshaft in the winch housing at the bull gear as now the oil level is above the mainshaft .Hear is a pic of the oil fill & breather cap.It's really the drain plug but now that the winch is upside down It's the fill tube .I fill the winch with 90 wt oil to about 3 inches from the top that way the worm gear & ball berings are always running in oil.You would sure enjoy running it ATCOEQUIP.I tell what,pound for pound it will pull right along with my other winch riggs & wreckers.It comes in handy at times.In the picture you can also see the rigging box.Cranes ,winch riggs,& wreckers need a rigging box to store hooks,pins,cable clamps,& so on.

Yep,a hickory tree works good for testing a new winch setup.Hickory is a stong yet flexable tree with a mean tap root.Now a sycamore tree has a tap root but the trunk is not as strong as the hickory.One of these days I am going to rigg up a hydraulic cylinder with a pressure gauge on it between the hickory tree and the winch.That way I can go off the psi reading on the gauge to know how many lbs of pull I have on the winch.
