Hi folks.

Just got back from Kentucky and the National Farm Machinery Show. Great show, had a great time.

Anyways, while there got what I feel is a good price on a laser and receiver but since I don't know much about the brands thought I'd ask here for some opinions.

The laser is a Leica Rugby. Was looking at either a 320 single grade or a 410 double grade. For ditch digging, what is better? Is double grade always better? Later on down the road it might be used with a dozer for pad building, so I'm sort of leaning towards the double grade even though it 20% more money.

For the receiver, we were looking at an Apache Bullseye 6 with magnet mount for the stick. I like this receiver because it is smart enough to figure out the grade whether the stick is plumb or not. The bullseye 5 is not.

Anyone run either of these and have anything to say about them good or bad?

Thanks for the help.

We have the apache receiver and it is brill. The receiver will only work to 30 degrees each way of plumb but it is a lot better than others that just read plumb. You need to read the instructions well as it takes some figuring out to set up, but once done your away with it. As for the lasers, buy the dual grade if you can, but keep an eye on the settings at all times, its easy to be running at the wrong grade and not realise it. Just need to check it every time you pass it on site.

The comment about the plumb accuracy on the Bullseye Plus 5 is incorrect. Both the 5 and 6 have the ability to detect whether the stick is plumb or not. The 6 has twice the compensating ability as the 5. The 6 has 30degree compensating ability, which is to say it will compensate 15 degrees either side of plumb. The 5 is half that. I have two plus 5's that I use for an automated laser grader for a skid steer. I also use the plus 5 on my excavators as well. Ideally I would prefer to have the 6 just for the excavators, but I doubt that will happen this year. Like someone pointed out, you need to read the instruction manual to figure out what all the blinking lights mean but once you get a handle on it, dollar for dollar it is tough to beat. There are systems that are easier to read grade on then the Bullseye system I think but for the money its a pretty good piece of kit. The 5 also has blade control for use on a dozer. What I like about the Bullseye receivers are that I can use it on the grader system or an excavator or a dozer or small grader. They are very adaptable.

I just got a new 5+ to run on my excavator.

The 5 and 6's can be run with the tornado system on a dozer to make them fully automated for not a lot of money. We looked into it, it would have been approx £1500 to supply plus fitting. But that is a fraction of the cost of some other manufacturers. We've been very impressed with our 6.
