Nice :drinkup
I had to do that on a JCB 1550 backhoe bucket a little while ago. The former owner must have thought you didn't need replace teeth when they worn off. So the shanks were worn down to nothing.

Nice job. I busted a bucket all to hell a few months ago scratching on rock because the boss was too cheap to get something with a breaker up there. He had just gotten $2000 worth of work done to the bucket and 2 hours later one shank had busted off, couple hours later lost another, and another and another, and half of the cutting edge on it. bucket was looking like a redneck hillbilly with one tooth left.

Pretty good looking welds :bouncegri
I used to be a welder I started at the same age as you I gave it up I only weld on my own stuff.
Alot of guys here like using Arctec welding rod its not a certified rod but its nice for doing maintenance work like that. I have burned many boxes of 7018 its what I learned with.
Its quite abit of work air arc'in the old shanks off and welding the new ones on.

A air arc is nicer than trying to wash out a weld with a torch. At our shop we have two 3 phase DC welders about 500 amps both Miller we do have a old AC machine its 600 amps if you can stand getting jolts up your arms it will burn a rail road spike :laugh
What wears out the most buckets here is the quick connect lugging some of the bigger machines will rip them off. The other problem is ripping the cheeks out of the bucket. Buckets here are hard surfaced before they even go into service. Usually most contractors get a year out of a bucket before it needs patching up or rebuilding depending on how much rock they are digging.

The hard surfacing rod used here its pretty expensive but worth it. It takes a long time doing the Xs and Os :bouncegri
What gets used alot here is old cutting edges off of grader blades welded to the heal of the bucket and on the cheeks of the bucket. If thats not possible then regular mild steel depending on the bucket if its a mini excavator then 1/2 is used if its a 16 ton and bigger machine 5/8s to 1" is used.
