great minds must think alike....or maybe it's a jersey thing.

we have a JLG 450A at work that I tried to bring home for exactly the same reason. Only problem was it didn't seem to have enough power to drive up the ramps of our20 ton tag trailer. Anybody out there have any experience with these things. We changed the hydraulic filters which helped, but it still seems low on power? We just bought it off E-bay and it seemed to run fine till we tried to load it on the trailer

These typically should be able to drive right up the ramps right? The specs say 30% grade capability for our 2wd model.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

is that yours or do you rent it?

There should be a switch on the control panel that has a pic of the machine sitting on a slope. You need to turn that on and also put it in slow mode. If al else fails you can use the boom and set it on the ground and telescope it out to help you up. I had no problem with my tag

I had a 60' delivered to my house a few years back to cut down some trees that were over the house. Easy as pie.

Nice job, But the trick will be getting the lift back out to get the lights off.

yeah. I tried the slope climbing setting but no good. I didn't think of the boom push idea. That will probably work temprarily. I'm gonna have to send it in for a service. I have a feeling the hydraulic fluid is bypassing somehere. The pump should be good. There was no metal at a all in the filters when we changed them.

I'm trying to restore a JLG 40F ? Does anyone out there have a service manual or wiring diagrams? We were hit here a few years back by a freak storm that dumped 18 inches of snow in less than 2 hrs. with no wind. All of the trees lost there tops as well as being crushed. We've cleared out everything that was down. The rest need to be topped. The JLG 40F needs to be rewired first.
Thanks

http://csapps.jlg.com/OnlineManuals/Browse.aspx All JLG manuals are available online.
Good luck!:canada
If that link does not work just go to JLG.com and search for manuals.

I tried the JLG website -3Doc. I didn't see the manuals on the F series, didn't see anything earlier than the H model. Did I miss something?

There is nothing on the 40F posted on there site. I called them about it. I left a message and they never called me back. Every time I call I'm on hold for 20 minutes listning to a message telling me how important I am, and how my down time means so much to them. I left over 5 polite messages to them without a reply.
I did get a responce by email. They gave me a link to there dealers. Not one of them did work on any outside equiptment. Most of the places were rentel places. One place in VT which is close to me said maybe they would work on it but it would have to be when things slowed down for them. I just need the diagrams and I'm ready to go.
Thanks -3doc for your input on this.
The manuals are for sale from JLG it's around 190 bucks. I saw one for 168 from another place. One went for 90 on ebay. I contacted the guy who bought it but he didn't want to sell it, or copy it for me.
JLG should try harder to back the older models. It's a real safty issue.

Yep, the F is old as dirt. :D

And their hyd and elec systems vaguely resemble the newer model JLG units. I've worked on them extensively...it's just been years ago. And there's a bunch more "up to date" junk in my brain on top of the F info that's buryed in there somewhere. :dizzy

Someone told me that the original owner of JLG started Genie. I don't know if that's true. They suggested that I contact Genie for support on the 40F.

Nope, JLG is the initials of the founder, John L. Grove. He founded JLG in McConnellsburg PA after he left the other company he co-founded earlier in the 60's; Grove Manufacturing in Shady Grove PA. No connection to Genie.

Just about any rental store that rents JLG can get parts for you.

od1, you really should start your own thread on your machine. That way, in the future, if you have a new problem you want to ask about, all you have to do is find the thread that "you started", as opposed to trying to figure out which thread you had all this info posted at. ;)

there is a bypass which you can tinker with. if it was a rental machine the bypass is probably set somewhat low so people don't get in trouble. be careful trying to push with the boom. The chains in those things aint cheap.
