    Cat overcharging

Yes, one bad battery will cause the good one to overcharge. The water usage will be much higher in the good battery. A voltage drop test on each battery will prove one is shot. A hygrometer will show a bad cell as well if it is not a sealed battery. Cam

    Odd problem getting on site

I had to turn my VPN off today to get on. My guess is this is a result of the spam attacks last week. pause on vpn just expired and I could not load a page. VPN is paused again and all working.

Chain size. Am I being silly?

What does your backhoe lift? I use 1/4 high grade chain on my farm tractor and only broke the chain on a sharp corner (my fault). My tractor only lifts around a thousand pounds so I am well within the load limit for my chain. I’ve had it for years and twisted of the load rating tag a long time...

    3 wire alternator nightmare

I bought a current shunt and remote meter from Amazon for about $50 can. for our camper battery. Gives both voltage and current and I only ran small wire to the meter. Cam

Flashing lights for pickups / Speed turtle

I prefer the old school rotating beacons. I find the new LED flashing packages are too bright. At night they are blinding. I always worry about hitting the people working because I am somewhat blinded by them. Even working around flashing lights, I found the old style are easier on my eyes...

    Memories for us old truckers

Blacksmith at work retired and shortly after, while camping with his wife, a tarp strap/bungy let go and the hook pierced his eye. Wife had to drive the rig out of the bush a few hrs and then on to the hospital. He now has a blind spot In that eye.

    Cam hook truss setter

When I built my last building, the trusses were delivered by a boom truck from a crane company that we used at work. The operator lifted a beam for me and put the truss bundle on the top plates. I sent him away with $ for a case of beer on us and we were all happy.

    Hour meter stopped working

Most hour meters that I have be exposed to are on from a run cct like the alternator on an engine or a main run contactor for an electric machine. Running means the little synchronous motor is running and that turns so gears that turn the number wheels. Cam

I also saved it for one of those nights when I wake up at 3 and can’t go back to sleep.

    Memories for us old truckers

There is not enough electricity in the grid to go to fully electric trucks. Until we solve the generation issue, we are not moving along way forward. Once we increase the supply, we will need to improve the transmission and distribution. All electric trucks are a long way away in the future...

    How not to do something

One reason to not get a new tank is we don’t want to be on the 10yr replacement plan.

    How not to do something

Electric heating elements need to be immersed all the time. Hot water tanks, hot tubes, water bath heaters, keeping them emersed seems to prolong there life

    How not to do something

If the ph of the water is too high or too low, the water becomes corrosive. At my former job, we added soda ash to the water in some places to correct the ph to protect the piping system.

    How not to do something

Electric heater elements definitely have a lifespan. Tanks mostly corrode from the inside until they pinhole leak. Gas valves gum up and thermal couples fail.

    How not to do something

Our hot water tank is on borrowed time for sure, 27 yrs old now. It has a vinyl pan and drain hose. I will change it out one day and add a steel pan under it. I will also look at those water detectors next time I go to HD or Lowes.

    Memories for us old truckers

Had a friend travelling with his wife on trip that stopped at one of the sketchy spots in Cal. yrs ago. Took his pistol in and took turns with his wife standing guard at the shower. Needless to say, they showered and then moved on down the road. Cam

    Drill Press

My Boss bought me a mill and a lathe a few yrs before I retired. That is why the old drill press has not been restored to working condition. Cam

    Drill Press

Our old drill press has a down feed but all Babbitt is worn and needs to be redone. The bevel gears are still ok, just barely engage now. An electric motor, belt, pulley and some redone Babbitt bearings and I could be drilling holes. (Edit: there is also a broken tooth on the low gear). The...
